My D wanted to apply to the University of Michigan early response, but unfortunately only has a 25 on the ACT but needs at least a 28 or higher. So we have come up with a plan....is this okay? We just need a second opinion! Please respond, I'm going crazy!

Also, We have made arrangements for her to take the ACT on Oct 27, but she will also take it in December.

Ok, so:

She will apply Regular decision to the University of Michigan. She can always apply during her sophomore year to the Ross School of Business, if she doesn't get selected to the preferred admit to the business school. If she does get a 28 or higher on the October test, then we will go ahead and send in the app with that score. She'll miss the early response deadline, but she still have her app turned in early (since its rolling admissions). If she doesn't get a 28 then she can just send in her app in early November and indicate on the app that she will take the ACT in December.

Also...She is applying to Villanova University (not sure of ACT range) and Miami at Oxford (24-28 ACT range). She wants to apply for the presidential scholarship at Villanova so will be submitting her app sometime this week. She will submit her Miami app sometime this week as well. She will send both schools her ACT test score from Oct. 27.

The rest of the schools she is applying to have RD deadlines of Dec 1 or Jan 1, 2, or 3. For these schools she will just submit the December ACT test. She will send her applications out sometime in the middle of November and indicate that she is taking the December test.

These schools are:
University of Pennsylvania
College of William and Mary
Boston University
Wake Forest University
Vanderbilt University
Duke
Cornell
Centre College
Transylvania University
Bucknell University
Belmont University
& of course the University of Michigan

So what do you think, is this okay??
Thanks for your help!

if you didn't do this, what else are you considering...it looks fine...just be sure her current ACT scores are okay for at least a couple of safety schools, just in case the score doesn't jump as much as you need

and not knowing much else, like GPA< etc, would she be happy at the schools you have listed where her ACT would be good enough?

I can feel your panic and I'm sorry. I know that the first time I went through this stuff is was very, very stressful. Heck, even the sixth time was still pretty stressful.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking of this board. It seems to me (and correct me if I'm wrong) that what you're saying is that she doesn't have the ACT score she needs to apply early, so she's going to retake the ACT twice and submit those scores. She's also going to apply other places.

That seems like a normal strategy in this case. Was there something specific you wanted to know?

Applying to Villanova but sending Oct 27 ACT scores - fine. With a 25 ACT she's pretty far outside the range of previous acceptances (it looks to be around 30-32, since they say the mid-50% SAT score was 1340-1430) but if her score improves enough they will still take it into account since they accept scores from all October tests. If she wants to apply for the Presidential Scholars she has to apply now anyway.

Applying to Miami at Oxford but sending Oct 27 ACT scores - I thought they were ED? Is this her first choice?

Applying to other schools with Oct 27 ACT - Not sure why she wants to apply mid November if the deadline is Jan 1st and she is may still have ACT to take again. There is no benefit to applying well before the deadline if a school isn't doing rolling admissions. Otherwise, yes, it's fine.

Thanks guys! Yeah, all I wanted to know is if it looks alright.

Tli83:Miami isn't her first choice. And she is applying to the other schools with the December test. Should she wait and send in her Villanova app RD? She wants to be considered for the Presidential Scholar. But I don't want her to get rejected b/c of her ACT score. Do they defer? Also, do you know if Villanova offers scholarships to RD applicants?

Yeah, it looks fine. Like citygirlsmom, I would recommend that you not COUNT on a higher ACT score. I might suggest at least looking at the idea of taking the SAT. She might do better on that than the ACT.

My big question is: Should she apply to Villanova EA (indicating that she will take the Oct test), or just apply RD? I'm worried her score won't go up enough (30-32 range). But the EA deadline is the Presidential scholarship deadline. Even so, she probably won't have a very good chance for the presidential scholarship with a 25. Anyone know if Villanova has scholarships for RD applicants?

Do you think having so many high reaches on her RD list is a good investment of her time? I'm sure she is a wonderful student, but I know of several students denied from U Penn, Duke, etc, with ACTs well into the 30's. She really can't expect too much. Is she the kind of kid who can shrug off a rejection? If not, please take a look at the 25-75% ACT ranges for those schools on collegeboard.com (or better, convert ACT scores to the SAT, since that will reflect a broader range of students) and reconsider after you have her final scores.

Make sure she likes the safeties on her list because most of those schools are high reaches, so she's not likely to get into them.

Make sure, too, that you can afford the colleges. Lots of those schools are very expensive and your D may not get merit aid, and need-based aid may be less than what you're willing to pay.

If she were my kid, I'd try to help her focus more on colleges where she's likely to get in because I'd fear that if those reach schools don't come through, she'll be unhappy with the schools that accept her: She may have set her heart too much on the reaches.

What's your state of residence? U Mich and Wm and Mary are very hard for out of staters to gain entrance to.

I am actually in the exact same boat as your daughter. I have a 25 on the ACT's but am re-taking this Saturday hoping for a 27+. I am also applying to UMich but I will clearly not make the deadline for the Early Response, but I will apply for Rolling Admissions. What your daughter is doing is perfectly fine.
