Major Question

I applied to another university and they told me because I was not qualified for the major I listed on my application, they denied me.

I was wondering if every university did this - had certain qualifications for specific majors.

Because of this I decided to put on my NYU app undecided.

I don’t know of any specific major here that has any qualifications (I can’t vouch for Tisch / Steinhardt though), but you should be fine with Undecided.

At NYU you apply directly to a program in one of the schools. So, you either get rejected or accepted, you cannot get rejected from the specific school and accepted as an undecided at NYU, unless you apply undecided. If you apply to a specific program you can also get put into the liberal studies program, which means you do liberal arts for 2 years, then go into the major you applied for originally. Usualy this happens to people with either low GPAs or low SATs.
