Let me know what you think! I already know it's a reach I'm just wondering if it's a semi-reasonable reach or just an out of the question reach.

Even with a higher SAT score, I think it would be quite a reach. Out-of-state students generally don’t have a very good chance without a 4.0 weighted GPA. I can’t say it’s impossible because “rules” are broken all the time, but it is, at this point, improbable.

What’s so bad about UNC, though? My parents considered retiring and moving to the East Coast, which would put me in a position where I would be more wanting to go to a school like it.

don’t sacrifice GPA for extracurriculars.
and why do people keep putting their “race” on these chance posts?
that has absolutely nothing to do with admissions at UCLA since the passing of prop. 209.

Your GPA is unimpressive, just being honest here.
That’s really gonna be a black spot on your application.
Your class rank is top 17%, which is good i guess but not UCLA good.
Your SAT scores are unimpressive, although many UCLA admits have had scores in the 1800s. Still, with your GPA you need every asset you can get, unfortunately your SAT score isn’t one.

However, you have two things going for you: Your ECs, which are fairly impressive although you kind of have too many in my opinion…woulda been better off doing a few and sticking to them for a long time and really doing it well. The second thing you have going for you is location. You’re not a Californian. You’re out of state. Because of our crappy state government and budget woes the UC system is considering admitting more OOS (out of state) students.

Assuming you don’t have some academic success obstacles (i.e. low-income, under-represented minority, disability of some sort, etc.) which could help put your low scores/GPA in some better context, and assuming that at the time you apply UCLA won’t weight OOS more favorably than in state students, I’d say your chances of admission into UCLA are very slim. If you want me to put a number to it i’d say less than a 10% chance of admission (just for scale’s sake). Just this year UCLA became more selective than Berkeley and will likely become more selective next year as more students apply (because it’s cheaper) and as they lower the number of offers of admission (to save money).
Don’t let my “chancing” of you discourage you though… still give it a try (ppl worse off have gotten in). You’ll at least give UC $60 it didn’t have before =p

According to this article ([Chancellor Block addresses scope of budget crisis, plans and priorities / UCLA Today](http://www.today.ucla.edu/portal/ut/budget-block-letter-95129.aspx)), UCLA is going to increase admissions for OOS next year.
“A moderate increase in the proportion of non-residents would generate millions of dollars in new revenue to protect instructional programs for all UCLA students.”

I think if you can manage to get a good SAT score, write very good essays, and you probably might have a chance. The average GPA weighted this year for admitted applicants was 4.16. Especially since you’re OOS, you need to be much higher than that.
Here’s a little advice: when you’re applying to UCLA, choose a major that’s the least popular (so your chances will be much higher). Once you’re in, you can just switch major (although it’s a tedious and hard process - but still plausible).

^um, choice of major is not considered by admissions if the major is within the college of letters and science. so if you wish to switch to something within the college of L&S, feel free to just pick undeclared. other schools (engineering, film, etc.) will consider major choice.

TWSA: nothing is “bad” about UNC…it’s just that I’m originallyfrom CA and I love it there.

nodnarb: I put down my race simply because I wanted people to know that I’m not URM. I know my gpa is unimpressive for UCLA, but I’m kind of figuring that I might as well apply and try, if I have the time to do so. I had a learning disability called auditory processing disability which I worked on and pretty much overcame by 8th grade, so I’m not thinking that will help a lot. I would be a full-pay applicant, if that helps.

fasttrack & jinobi: I would be applying to the college of letters and science.

Definitely work on your SAT scores. With that GPA, you want to rock the SAT. Also, write a stellar essay. I mean, creative, outstanding, amazing. If those two things are perfect, they might help overcome the GPA.
Good luck girl! : )
