Major status change - Pre-Bio to Elect Engg and UCSB vs Gatech

Hi

My son (instate CA) got Pre-Bio major in UCSB but he is more interested in doing BME (BioMedical Eng - I know its not offered in UCSB). The alternative is do Electrical Engg with minor in Biology. He has applied for major status change but we will not know by May 1st. Question is how easy/hard is to transfer from Pre-Bio major to Elect Engg major once he joins ?

He also got admitted into Case Western and Georgia Tech with BME. He also considering the same Electrical+Bio path at these two schools. We went to Case and got impression from EE and ME profs that BME is a breath-major and you are better doing a depth-major such as EE or ME and minor in Bio/BME.

Cost wise - UCSB (33K) < Case (35k) < Gatech (40K)
Distance - UCSB < Case < Gatech
USNR Ranking - UCSB < Case < Gatech (though within 2-3 pts of each other)
USNR Eng Ranking - Case (42) < UCSB (38) < Gatech (5)

Trying to decide between Gatech and Case and also considering UCSB if the transfer to Elect Eng is possible easily.

Thanks
mwahal

path is not easy (switching to EE)…to be honest, any of those choices are good

i switched from ME to EE so it was pretty easy since the lower div pre-reqs are the same. As a current pre-bio, he has to start IMMEDIATELY by enrolling/petitioning for ENGR3…etc

just have to do well in the classes listed in the form to switch

My son got an email from UCSB couple of days back its highly unlikely before May 1st and also may not be possible later due to impact and competitiveness. He has decided to goto Georgia Tech.

Thank you all for your advise.

Initially, got admitted to EE for this fall. A month ago, I switched my major to pre-bio as I am also interested in BME. Later I decided to switch back and last week I was able to switch back to EE. But, some people feel that Chemical Engineering is more closer to BME than EE.

You can aslo try for Chem Engg at UCSB as it is highly regarded and ranked #8 in the nation. I know it is hard to switch to this major as it is very competitive. But, still one one try. I have seen many people have switched to Chem Engg from a major like psychology.
