major stressing

ok so I am taking the april 1st sat..and have been studying like mad!! (I did HORRIBLE on the psat)

I have been taking two practice tests a week, and yesterday (saturday a week before the test) I did ok..(better then my PSATs by a landslide but not above 700 in every subject [my goal]) (m-650, V- 610 W-710 w/ a 12 on the essay)

i was ok..with my results but i really wanted to work on my math, verbal, and grammer to get my scores up......

so today i took my 2nd practice test today..hoping to improve and OMG!!! I did horrible: 500s in everything except writing where it was a 650......why> Why?? wHY???

I am so stressed out right now...i need advice..anything.....my parents are cool if i want to take time off this week to either relax or study (it's teh beginning of the trimester so i won't miss much)

I am really anxious...I have not yet looked over my test and read the answer explanations (i use PR) , but i am going too...I don't know what happened...and if you can't tell i am pretty frazzeled by the drop of my scores

plz give me your advice!!

thanx

(sorry i sound so paniced..i am!!)

i think you have missed the most important part of studying for the SAT.
you have to go over questions, both right and wrong, and get the feel of your weakness. Why don't you try to redo the test, and feel confident about yourself.

and use CollegeBoard. I have scored less on the PR when i took it.

thanks...also, in addition, i think i did not make myself clear:

i do generally go over practice tests, I just have not yet gone over this one (a tensy bit scared, i must admit) but yeah...

also:

did u feel that the PR tests were harder than the real SAT??

i usually get around 2-3 wrong on each sections of verbals, but when i did PR i got 5+.
for me reading passages were harder. but thats just for me.

and dont stress over it too much. you have 2 more chances to retake.

I'm in the same boat as you...

My math scores are consistently in the low 700s...but I realize if I eliminate my stupid mistakes I'll score a 770-780. My CR is in the low 600s...I'm hoping to bring that up to a mid to upper 600. My W is at a high 600....and I hope to bring that up to a low 700.

Is that possible in a week?

i dunno...i hope so !!!!! :)

If anyone has any advice on how to do it ....

PR is much harder than the real SAT.
I got a 670M/650CR/700W on the PR, took the practice one from CB and got a 740M/690CR/710W. on the real one, I got a 7100M/700CR/720W.
Take the CB practice test to get a real predictor of how you'll do, and to relieve stress! :)

this may sound like a dumb question..... but aren't the PR tests kind of good then, because they over-prepare you?

but thanx rightwing for your advice

rightwing: How did you calc your CB score? Which part of the range did you use? Did you calc the high end, low end, median, average?

they do not "overprepare" you. they are about the same difficulty, but the questions on it are not very well written. but then again I am just a low scorer like you guys (r 720, m 800, w 740[2 wrong 8 essay])

thanx for all your posts guys...but can anyone reccomend anything i should do over the nxt days (till saturday..ahh).... i am pretty upset that my scores went down!!!! they r soppossed to go up!! should i do a section in the bluebook? or something else?

For a high score in the CR section, you need a pretty good grasp of vocabulary, as missing enough vocab can drive you out of the 700s pretty fast.

As far as the passages go, I think that it's much easier if you eliminate what the answer isn't. Trying to qualify a tough answer may be difficult, but if you get rid of what it's probably not, then it's much easier I think. Also, if you're getting stuck, eliminate all but 2, then move on and finish those questions before you read another passage (it's important to finish all questions on 1 passage before moving on).

And I really can't emphasize being calm enough. I know it seems cliched, but if your panicing/rushing you usually read too fast and overlook critical details, read too fast to comprehend important information, etc, and end up wasting time rereading it. If you read quickly but carefully and calmly, it's much easier, I'm sure of it. Also, time yourself when you take practice sections on CR to see if you need to go faster or slower. Ideally, I usually get through a section with 2:30 left, and use that time to do the answers I didn't do yet. (Unfortunately, I'm still missing about 4 total for CR), but that puts me in the 700 range, so I'm happy for now. Anyone taking this test obviously has more chances, so remember to keep the test in perspective and it'll be easier not to panic.

I took a math section for practice, started panicking, and missed 6 (and all of them were careless) I calmed down, did another one, and got em all. This isn't to say that being confident and/or calm guarantees a perfect, but it is to say that it makes a big difference error-wise.

Usually I stress a lot over tests.... not my best quality, but it happens. However, right now I'm not worried about the SAT. Why? You can take it again. Let's say you completely screw up, you can cancel your scores and nobody else will ever know. Unlike a Calc quiz or history test, there are do-overs. Stressing won't increase your score - go in confident, but not overly so. If you haven't already, I would try the free test on CB's website - it will likely be more accurate than PR. Good Luck!
