My daughter wants to go into pediatric physical therapy. Does anyone have an idea of what track might be good for that at Tulane? There aren't pre-phys therapy programs anymore. To practice she will need her doctorate. ka- ching! She just needs to major in something that will give her the math and science courses she needs to get into grad school. Any ideas other than pre-med?

There isn’t actually a pre-med major at Tulane… you can major in anything you want and still be “pre-med” as long as you take all the requirements. Cell & Molecular Biology covers all the pre-med requirements I believe, and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology covers them all except physics, which is recommended for the major but not required. Basically, tell her to pick something she likes and to meet with the pre-med adviser in the Center for Academic Advising. They will make sure she gets all the requirements done
I get that physical therapy graduate school is NOT the same as medical school, but I’m sure the requirements are similar.

A good friend’s D is planning to pursue a PhD in PT. She is a junior at Case Western and is a double major in cognitive science and kiniseology. Tulane has cognitive studies but no longer offers kiniseology. The Cell and Molecular Biology program appears to be the recommended path for Tulane students. From the website:

idad: Tulane actually doesn’t have a major in kinesiology, at least for undergrads. I have no idea about grad school but I guess it isn’t really relevant to this conversation anyway. Kind of a shame because it would probably be a great preview of PT!

Edit: You edited your post before I refreshed the page… sorry!

wysteri: I saw that it no longer had that major and correct my post. Thanks.

I believe LSU’s physical therapy program is housed at their medical center campus in New Orleans. I would suggest calling them and asking advice as to what prerequisites they require. Since they are in the same city as Tulane, they will have some familiarity with the school and could perhaps give you some guidance.

If your child is a junior in high school and looking at where to apply, there are several schools around the country that offer physical therapy PHD programs, sort of a combo BS/PHD program, that lasts longer than the standard four year matriculation. Marquette University in Milwaukee has such a program.

It is very difficult to gain admittance into physical therapy programs. LSU’s physical therapy program has many applicants and is very difficult to get into. Many kids try multiple times to get in before finally being accepted.
