halloa,

I'm looking to pick up a second major in addition to CAPS (China and Asian Pacific Studies), but I'm having trouble deciding between ENGL, HIST, and GOVT (with an emphasis on international relations). I'm only a frosh, but I need to pick one of the three pretty soon in order to graduate on-time since I'll be doing FALCON all next year. Before I graduate, I want to:

1) significantly improve my writing
2) learn another language (c/o FALCON)
3) be in the ballpark, in terms of my courseload / GPA, for admission to grad (IR), law, or (less likely) business school -- whether or not I'm actually interested in those programs at the end of my four years. I just want to keep my options open.

With these goals in mind, which of the three majors I mentioned would best complement CAPS? English is enjoyable and would help me to improve my writing, but there is little intellectual overlap between Chaucer and China. History is just as fun, and would lend broader context to the more contemporary CAPS material, but I can't see myself getting much personal feedback on my writing from a history prof. Finally, IR directly complements CAPS, and (I think) is pretty heavy on quantitative stuff (which IR grad schools emphasize), but I don't think many IR classes are writing-intensive.

Any ideas? Keep in mind that the tightness of my schedule makes it difficult for me to screw around with electives.

Thanks.
