Major Undecided / Degree Objective - Bachelor of Arts

I was accepted for the above but in my application I had Mechanical engineering as my first choice and undeclared engineering as my second. How did I get admitted to Undecided??? Don’t understand this at all. Does anyone have any insight?? I really only want to do engineering - is this just a pathway into the Viterbi School ?

S has the exact same situation. We remember the staff at Viterbi saying this could happen and you need some sort of GPA to be admitted to Viterbi. We don’t remember the details and plan on calling or having GC call on Monday. It is an odd result as S has almost a full year of engineering college credit including multi variable calc and differential equations taken at a college. It will be hard to choose USC if he is not in his major. We will be full pay and $70k a year for an option seems to high a price to pay. Happy to be in be confused with this major.

I am similar with the math component. I will have to look into it this week - will post what I find out and if you do the same that would be great. I am hoping it is not ‘arts’ related subjects - I have no interest in that pathway. Good luck

My son is currently a CS Games major in Viterbi (junior). He was accepted as Undeclared in Dornsife. His first semester he had to take two CS courses and math (linear algebra since his AP scores let him skip over the two Calc courses). He got an A, A- and a B- in the three courses. He submitted his transfer request to be formally accepted to Viterbi and they let him in. It was stressful but very doable.

This is what we found out so far. They felt S was a strong candidate but didn’t have space in Viterbi. Once enrolled he can transfer in. In the mean time he got a letter welcoming him to Viterbi. So he called and they said it was a mistake. We will be calling again tomorrow to try and get more info. Still confused. Any news vanderdonk?

Spoke with someone in Viterbi and they said that when it comes to orientation you sit down with a counselor and they walk you through what classes to take that basically shadow an engineering student of Viterbi but you are not technically in Viterbi. After your first year you can apply to Viterbi and as long as you get A and Bs you should be fine. She said it’s totally do-able and you graduate in 4 years. Also reiterated how hard this year was to even be accepted into USC and also said lots of mistakes were made with telling students the wrong thing… sounds a bit odd.

What are you thinking of doing vanderdonk? S has been direct admitted in to higher ranked engineering programs, that he liked (EA-GA Tech, UT Austin) but he really like USC. Tough decision.

I am 80% going to USC. Just waiting on one more decision that may sway me but it is likely to be a no-go, however if it was a direct admit to engineering it would be a tough call. California suits me for many different reasons and I am pretty confident I could eventually get into Viterbi. As my parents say 'it is a nice ‘problem to have’. I am lucky that cost is not a factor for me (3rd party scholarship) but I know if it was I would go to a cheaper option if it was a direct admit and a higher ranked school that I was happy with. Which way are you guys thinking.

He is leaning to direct admits. Seems too risky. We also spoke with Viterbi admissions and got same answers. Thank you for sharing. We are off to visit Texas and then final decision. He did fill out housing as a hedge today. But I am guessing he goes with GA Tech. Good luck to you!
