What UC do you want to attend and why? My major is Anthropology, but I want to completely emphasize in Bio Anthro. These are the schools I'm applying to in order that have my major:

UCSB: B.A Biological Anthropology -- reach since I'm missing half of the prereqs
UCD: A.B Anthropology (evolutionary track) -- Mostly likely in
UCLA: Anthropology--I'll be above the gpa average of Anthro students that applied in 2011; only reason I'm applying; missing two prereqs that are not offered at my school
UCSC: Anthropology -- TAG in

Should I TAG to UCSC or UCD? UCSC for its location or UCD for the major. I can still emphasize in Bio Anthro (by electives) at UCSC but the classes aren't as awesome as Davis.

I tagged to UC Davis in Anthropology (sociocultural track) and am starting this Sept. I agree that Davis has some awesome evolutionary track anthro classes. I plan to take quite a few myself. Can’t really say which is best UCD or UCSC but I do know the dept at Davis is very good. They are getting much more competitive with admissions and so you might consider tagging to Davis.

Im at UCSC right now and its really not that great. You might think that theres a lot of small beaches with gloomy weather and great surf, but it’s really not like that. First of all, you’ll be taking some hard classes which require a good deal of work. Second, You might decide to join a club or find a job which will take out even more time. Third, there are tons of tourists every weekend at almost every beach and surfing location possible in santa cruz. (Most aren’t there to surf, but they still just stand at the cliffs and stare at all the surfers) The only times you would have a good private surf is probably during a weekday, but I don’t know if you’re willing to use up so much energy for surfing instead of classes and work. If you really like surfing and beaches, then go for ucsc but college is for learning and school experiences, you’ll always have the chance to go surfing anywhere u want after you graduate and get a job.

Depends on how terrible a location is for you and what the other school has to offer academically. UCSC may not have an official evolutionary track like UCD but maybe it still has a lot of the same type of classes that you could take for electives (whether for regular electives or for major electives).

Honestly, in terms of location, they aren’t much different. They are both in the middle of nowhere with a major city (San Francisco) about 1.5-2 hours away. The only difference is that UCSC has a bunch of trees and UCD has Sacramento 10 minutes away. But having been to both schools, I can say they have a very similar “college town” vibe.
