Major

I’m thinking of getting my bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and getting a master’s in aerospace engineering. Is this a good idea? My reasoning behind this is so I won’t be tied down to just aerospace engineering my whole life. I thought that if I get a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering there’s a way broader amount of jobs for me to look for instead of just aerospace engineering jobs. As of right now my main focus is in aerospace engineering, I just wanted to know if this is a good idea or a bad one. Thanks.

The first thing you need to do is not tie your future to graduate school at this point. Don’t go into this assuming you will automatically do graduate school right off the bat, because that is not the right route for everyone. Pick a major that will stand a chance of landing a job you like right off the bat. If you decide you want to do graduate school right away and still feel that way by about junior year, then you can safely start planning for it.

At any rate, you’ll have the same “problem” with an MS in aerospace engineering as you would if you had a BS. Your highest degree is what matters most. That said, the fears of joblessness with an aerospace degree are largely overblown anyway.
