major??

Is it possible to double major in commerce and engineering at UVa??
If so does it take any extra semesters and how can I pursue that if i have enrolled into arts and sciences?
Dean J and current uva students please address this question..
I have around 44 AP and IB credits that will be accepted at UVa as shown on their website and can students enroll in more courses than the usual 17 credits/semester?

Hmm I guess it might be possible, but I would NOT suggest this…

The schools are both rigorous and classes require much time for each.

I would narrow down what your interests are and choose a school from there.

This has been discussed, extensively, before. Search the forum for “engineering” and it might take you 10-15min, but your answer is in there.
Long story short: yes, you can double major, but it’s EXTREMELY difficult, especially if your engineering major is anything but systems.

It’s probably possible but I don’t understand why you’d want to do it. Both courses of study have a lot of time-consuming, structured activities that might make doing the double major impossible, even if you were talented and efficient enough to keep up with studying and problem sets. Just pick a major you like and go from there. It’s probably easier to go from engineering to some sort of business program later, but someone with an undergraduate major in business could go into an area of engineering like systems engineering.

what about a spanish and marketing double major?

My son looked into that. It can be done but likely you will have to take more than 17 credits every semester. You need to fulfill the requirements in your major for both schools (so some of the accepted credits will not help). He is now double majoring in sys eng and econ, taking 19 credits the last 2 semesters and again next. It is a lot of work and he thought of dropping the econ major. Since he only have to overload for one more sementer, he decided to stay with it. For a double major in commerce, I think he said you need to be in the commerce school in order to be able to register for their required class. He would also need additional classes because its has less overlap comparing to econ major.
