Majoring Civil/Electrical Engineering?

I'm applying to the UC's (all of them)

Civil Engineering is my first major (i wrote about becoming a civil engineer in my personal statement)

however i'm also interested in Electrical Engineering (cell phones...)

Is it weird if I apply as a Civil Engineer but also have an alternate major as Electrical Engineer?

Double major? You probably wouldn’t graduate in 5 years -_- there is so little overlap.
If it’s just alternative, that’s fine.
Once you enter college, you will have some time to explore your interest. Get involve in clubs, speak to upperclassmen… and you might like EE more than CE, or no longer interested in EE.
Cell phones… are you referring to the communication technology, such as iPhone hardware development??

not a double major. within the application it says you can pick an alternate major

so i picked electrical as an alternate…

don’t electrical engineers make electronic products? or help in making them?

That should be fine. ^_^

And yeah, if there is a circuit involved, you can bet that an electrical engineer designed/made it!

Also, almost EVERYONE changes their major at least once during college. They take an intro class or something then find out that that is not the field they want to pursue.

also the weird thing is that I applied to UC Santa Barbara as an electrical engineer (because they don’t offer civil engineering) but my personal essay is about civil engineer!

what am i going to do? that would look so strange?

Well I don’t know how much this applies but I am currently at a big state school majoring in Construction Engineering, which is a kind of close to CE (not to start an argument). But I am doing an Emphasis in Electrical systems, so I could go into the construction field but I also have background as an EE, therefore I could take the Professional EE Test (I forget what its called) and maybe get an EE job.

^

It would probably look very bad on your part as a lack of interest that you didn’t check what majors they offered before applying.

so you think i should change essay topics or just go with it? because my essay really leans toward architecture/structural engineering (buildings in my community)

would it be a absolute rejection if I applied with my essay like that? How much would it hurt my chances?

Well I think they’ll understand that you write ONE essay for all UC schools and that they don’t offer your major. Shouldn’t be a huge deal I don’t think.

hopefully it doesn’t matter! i don’t want to risk being rejected just because my essay is about civil engineering but I applied as an electrical :(

it’s not my fault they don’t offer civil engineering

??? What a strange thing to say! Don’t apply there if they don’t have the major you’re interested in. Or submit a different essay for that one school.

you can’t. one essay for all the UC schools

plus I want to apply to all the UC schools. Don’t want to not apply just because they don’t have my Major.

UCSB ECE is top notch, I’d say up there among UC’s with Berkeley and LA, research-wise stronger than UCLA.

http://www.ece.ucsb.edu/news/index.php?i=582

well that’s bad for him, because that means their ECE dept is probably more selective than their other engineering departments.

If you’re that insistent about applying to all the UC’s, why not write a more general essay?

yeah thats true but that means i might have to scrap my previous essay. or just edit it a little

You’re the only one who can make that decision. How high on your list is the school without civil engineering? If you think you’d really like to go there, it’s worth the effort to redo your essay.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
