Majoring in Accounting - Where can I apply it?

Hi,

I plan on majoring in accounting, but I'm not sure where exactly I would want to work yet (public, tax, etc.). I was, however, considering working somewhere in the hospitality field. Does anyone know what I would have to do in order to work in that field, and if it would be "better" in terms of job supply and security? Mainly, I guess I would say that I would go for something with hotels, but that's not a definite choice yet.

And obviously, we all know that this question is going to be asked: how's the $?

Note: If possible, any personal experience is preferred, and if you could, PM me.

Pay in hospitality is much lower. Also, hotels are unionized so it adds a whole new element to accounting. Job security is average but hotels are notorious for high turnovers because most people do not like dealing with the union and end up going to private or corporate.

Thanks for the response. There’s some information there that isn’t very clear to me. Are you saying that because of unions, it changes the work conditions? Or are you talking about the work type? I assume it’s not the latter. Also, when you say job security is average, what would you say you’re comparing it to?

Unions do not change the work conditions for you as an accountant but it changes the way you do accounting for certain expenses required by union laws which can make auditing very complicated.

When I said Job security is average, I mean you will be able to find a hotel accounting position but it won’t be anything amazing straight out of school. My recommendation is, if you really want to work in the hospitality industry, work in corporate(company that owns the hotel) and not in the actual hotel. That way you are surrounded by better talent and they can help you grow your career.
