I attend a CC and majoring in CS but I m not that good at math. I had a math class last semester and got a B+ but that’s because I actually sat down and studied and stuff. I love computers so I don’t see myself doing anything else honestly. Everybody is telling me to change my major because they know I Don’t like math but I’m willing to apply myself and learn and push thru it cause of my love for Computer/technology… but at the same time I don’t want to wait till it’s too late and then end up having to switch major and having to start over. so i’m in a lil dilemma. I would like to take a career path into Mobile app Dev or network security those are the two fields im interested in.
Have you considered majoring in Information systems/IT instead? Lighter on the math courses but still gives you many options in working with computers/technology.
i did but my CC doesn’t have that as a degree. im majoring in CS with a discipline in IT. that’s what it says @Gumbymom
@triniboyshaq: So what is the required Math courses needed for transfer?
Which 4 year universities are you targeting for transfer and do they offer IT/IS as a major? Have you compared the IT/IS curriculum to the CS curriculum at your target universities?
Also you can do CS as a Bachelor of Arts instead of a Bachelor of Science…that takes less math.
Also…what math class did you take? What is wrong with a B+?
@Gumbymom I need Calculus 1 & 2 to transfer to a 4 yr university. and yes the colleges I’m looking at has IT as a major, and I haven’t compare the curriculum as yet, I’m working on that, just kind of busy
@bopper I never heard about a bachelor of arts for CS, i’ll look into that and nothing is wrong with a B+ lol I was just saying that I got it and I can do the math if i apply myself, well that what I think
So was your B+ n Calculus 1? If so, then I would push through and continue with Calculus 2 and see how you do.
Depending upon the 4 year university course curriculum for CS, you usually need Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, 1-2 Statistics courses, so at least 4 additional Math courses after you finish Calculus. It is really up to you if you feel that you can handle these Math courses. As suggested by @bopper, a BA degree in CS might be lighter in the Math requirements.
@Gumbymom yes a BA is lighter but it’ll be harder to get a job lol, Im excelling on all my other classes just having a hard time with the math but I’ll push thru and buckle down… thank you for your help
A BA vs BS should make little difference in getting a job. Most employers are focused on your job skill set rather than the specific classes you have taken. Get some job experience through internships and you should be fine.
I understand that but it’s certain classes I need to take and I have interns. thank you for everything @Gumbymom
b+ is considered failing? Lol
as suggested by @Gumbymom get internships but you can survive all those math classes if you work hard, go to clsss everyday and takes notes, do your homework, do extra problems and homework, and go to a tutor or your Professor for help when you need it. Does your school have a tutoring center? If so, how was your experience with the tutoring? Was your professors in your math classes willing to help? I’ve had bad tutors in the past, quit going to the bad tutors, and only went to my favorite tutor from that point on. I don’t think anyone is naturally good at math so if you really want to pursue this path you can do it. I am not naturally good at math either but still plan on majoring in Geology, Meteorology, or Engineering. B+ is still a good grade so don’t beat yourself up over that grade. The Pre-Engineering head at my school told me that I don’t have to be making straight A’s in math to be considered good at math enough for engineering but have to have grades of B or higher to be considered good enough at math. Good luck!
You don’t need calculus 2 at all universities AFAIK, ,some only require 1 calculus and 1 statistics class, or maybe 2 calculus classes but it’s business calc so it’s easier.
@philbegas thank you
@SuperGeo5999 thank you and I never miss or reach late for a math class hahahah. I’m sure we have tutors so I’ll look into that
@triniboyshaq well yeah but there is more to doing well in a class especially math than attending class every time. Good luck! I hope you graduate with your computer science degree because it’s a high paying field and will always be in Demand. Have you thought about minors?
@SuperGeo5999 I know there’s more to it other than attending lol I was just saying. And yeah I’m still trying to figure out what to minor in. And thank you very much, I hope I grad with it too lol
@triniboyshaq I was reading an old thread of yours on your grades first semester of college, your situation during that time gave me hope because it seems similar to my current situation because I did my first semester of community college this past spring and I withdrew from English Composition and got a D in math but I’m retaking both classes this fall and hope I do better. What math class was it you started out in? I started out in Intermediate algebra.
@SuperGeo5999 yeah I started in intermediate algebra also and now I’m in college level math, I take a math class during with summer or winter break. I really need to graduate so I can transfer and dorm somewhere. But just keep pushing and paying attention and you’ll do good
