I understand that cmc doesn’t have a computer science major but if I am accepted to cmc can I still do a computer science major through another school in the consortium?
Yes. You can major through Harvey Mudd or Pomona.
There is a news that CMC is opening its own CS major.
CMC is indeed considering opening a CS major. I’d expect that to be launched next year (C of 2021) or maybe later. That said, many people do CS majors at Harvey Mudd which is one of the best CS majors in the country.
@HSAnon1997 or any CMC students in CS major: I heard that CMC students have a hard time getting CS courses they want from Harvey Mudd. Is that correct? Is the new CS major at CMC launched now and does it prevent people from taking CS major at HM? Thanks so much for your insight.
May be anecdotal, but my kid is at CMC and taking a CS class at Mudd this semester. Not majoring in CS, but going for a CS sequence.
Hey @STEMify. I can actually provide more information about the major now.
CMC is making a push to add CS into the various fields in which we already excel. For instance, the CS program would teach people how to code in R to pursue quantitative research in government and economics. I’m not sure if it will be a major or a sequence. The underlying point, though, is that CMC’s CS program will likely be something you do in conjunction with another major. Still very useful.
I’m honestly not sure when that will be rolled out. CMC moves quickly because it is a young college and President Chodosh is eager to implement new programs. It could be ready as early as Fall 2018, but I think a better guess would be Fall 2019 or later.
My friend who is a CS major at CMC says he takes all of his classes at HMC and that, as a CS major, he has no problems getting into classes needed.
Thanks @HSAnon1997 and @tenniswimvball for the information.
Just went to a CMC info session and tour with DS. Son asked the question in the info session, and answer was still uncertain – “there’s a lot of push for it; it could be ready by fall of next year, but don’t count on it.”
Later, our tour guide was actually a CS major. She’s taking all CS classes at Harvey Mudd. According to her, if CMC doesn’t have your major, e.g. CS, Music, Drama, etc., you can take it at another college, but the diploma will still say “CMC”. However, if CMC have your major, you have to take it at CMC. In that sense, I would rather they don’t add CS, since the newly formed CS major will likely be weaker than Harvey Mudd’s.
CMC is reformatting its CS sequence and adding a Data Science sequence (which would have some focus on R). While DS is new and includes CS classes, the CS sequence has not changed much. However, CMC is pursuing ways to make HMC CS classes more accessible to CMCers. Not sure what exactly is happening, but CS5, the intro CS class at Mudd, will be more accessible to CMC students.
Regardless of the changes, if you are a CMC student, you can pursue a HMC CS major and will have priority, along with other HMC CS majors, in choosing HMC CS classes.
