Majoring in Econ looks like the better choice atm.

same here imo. From what I have observed, Econ requires more math, stat analysis, and other technical things

Econ. & Then if you want you can do an MBA and that would cover the Bus. Adm. part of it for sure! :)

@lemon and strive101 THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IM THINKING!!!

NEVER major in Bus Admin. Just take a couple accounting courses and you’re good. Only major in econ if you plan on getting a PhD in economics. I would recommend majoring in a STEM field with a sprinkle of accounting courses.

My reasoning behind this is because
1)you could get any job a business/econ major can get if you did a stem major and took accounting courses (unless you want to become an accountant, then in that case major in accounting),
2) if you realize you don’t like business while you’re in college, you’ll have a fallback,
3) business admin is the most saturated major in the country with 20% of all graduates in that major,
4) STEM classes involve much more critical thinking than business classes,
5)MBA’s prefer admitting STEM students over business majors since you’ll likely be repeating the same courses.

Also, I’ve talked to some people who majored in econ (one from Princeton and one from UCLA) that work in business development for big tech companies (think Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc.) and they said that they don’t even use what they learned in their econ major and that if they could do it all over again, they’d choose a STEM major.

^Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking.
I got accepted to UCSD under joint math/econ (still waiting on LA/Cal), but if I do go to SD, I’m looking forward to the coursework in my major

@strive101 im in the same path as you strive, like now im kinda debating either going towards the engineering at ucsd or doing their econ program … Have you heard about the econ program at ucsd?

wow really? my major is business admin and I just got in UCI. I was happy to hear that since i got in one of the toughest major in that school, and now I saw this, Im so disappoint.

@ieatsharks
nice! for SD’s econ program, as long as you’re management sci or joint math/econ, you should be ready for grad school in econ (or if you decide to go that route. But if you do a strict Econ BA anywhere, once out of college, I have heard that you’re competing against other Biz Admin majors.
So pretty much, after talking with my econ professors and other Grad students in econ, BA in econ doesn’t prepare you as well for grad school for econ as it’s not math-intensive.

Business major is useless, since It’s hard to get in.

also, if you look it up online, econ majors are 2nd highest paid after engineers. (of course, this is subjective as it depends what econ field you go in. example- econ analyst etc)

@MocaFrappe, thats just trolling
@strive101 hmmmmmmm do you know the difference between management science and econ/mathmatics for ucsd? (btw thx for answering) ^^
@ people reading this forum. What do you guys think about Business Admin B.S?

@ieatsharks I believe econ/math is held to a higher regard than management sci (management sci, i think, is a biz admin, but it’s more math intensive than the biz admin majors in other schools)
Math/econ is somewhat like a double major in math/econ, as for upper division, you take half math courses, half econ courses.

Hope this helps :)

@strive101 according to the pre-reqs the only difference between the two, math/econ requires differential equations while the other doesn’t. Both are regarded as great majors right? cuz i dont wanna make a wrong choice ><

Reason why i bring up this forum topic is because of this article.
[Wealth or Waste? Rethinking the Value of a Business Major - Yahoo! Finance](Wealth or Waste? Rethinking the Value of a Business Major)

@ieatsharks the math that you’re talking about is lower-div requirements, and you’re right about that. But I’m talking about upper-division math. I don’t believe management sci requires much upper-div math while Math/econ requires a lot of it.

@ strive101, okey dokey! Like im not really interested into pursuing engineering. I would rather choose business admin or econ over it. And if i chose business admin, i would emphasize in accounting of finance. Choices are tough ><

Yeah Business Administration really is a useless major

@bertstarington
my bad i didn’t mean econ majors as in straight out of undergrad. I meant econ majors after graduate in econ will be supposedly “high” paid, when they have the qualifications to be analysts and other specialized/technical positions.

@ferrari4xD Did you apply as a business admin to all yourcollege choices?
