Majoring in genetics, is it worth it?

So after looking at some threads, my conclusion: Don't bother going for a major in Biology. it isn't worth it.

To what extent does this apply if I were to major in Biology, but in a specialized area like genetics? I want to pursue genetic engineering and I really love it, but well, if it isn't going to get me paid, I would rather change to another higher paying field.

I'm thinking of double majoring in accounting as well, just to have a 'back-up' plan if my biology major doesn't work out.

So, thoughts, feedback?

bump please!

Any majors in, around, on top of, or below biology have very limited career prospects. a “Genetical engineer” is probably more of just a fancy name for a research geneticist or something, like how aerospace engineers are often called “rocket scientists”.

@ctesiphon, I enjoy research, but if it doesn’t pay… What about genetic counselling? I’ve read on some forums that it pays up to 120k/year, but more often than not, that figure varies a lot…

I’ve honestly never heard of genetic counselling before.

In general, most counselling careers are wide-ranging in their potential salaries.

Genetic counseling is very different than lab-based genetic engineering. I’d recommend you research the career more and shadow and/or speak to genetic counselors to see if it’s something that you are actually interested in.
