hello, I decided to major in history and now I am in my final year of college. I am worrying getting a decent job that can pay the bills and where my mother don't have to worry so much about it. I am really interested in East Asia, especially Japan. Even taking a Japanese language course for my last year (would have done it sooner but getting in a Japanese class in Hunter College can be really tough so I settled for German for language req.) Am planning on learning more Japanese. Anyway I know I don't want to become a teacher since I get really nervous in public speaking. Although working in a museum probably won't be too bad for me. Thinking along this line, what career should I aim for, if I should go to graduate school (and if I should get a master in Jap./Asian studies, I.R, business). Do not mind working for the government or a company that have business w/ Japan.

any advice would be much appreciated and please ask me anything that would be helpful.

Well, if you don’t want to BE in Japan/Asia I.R. Would be your best bet. I would look to see if any company you apply to work at works with Japan. Good luck.

Well if you don’t want to teach, how about working for a research firm? Some think tank for the government, perhaps?

I know a guy who wants to get a doctorate in history. A DOCTORATE in HISTORY. But he doesn’t want to teach…he wants to be a curator #-o I could barely stop myself from telling him he would regret the debt for the rest of his life. History is not a marketable major and people who choose history as a major seem to think this is all a joke. Foreign language majors fare much better in my opinion. I am not against liberal arts: foreign languages (besides Spanish and Mandarin), music, economics, and biology are all well worth the money if used for the right reasons. Work on developing a second language proficiency. You really shouldn’t have chosen history if you weren’t going to teach…not good :o3

Sorry for the late response, busy w/ this semester. Anyway thx for for inputs, give me more to think about n consider. I wasn’t think too much when I chose history and my desire to not teach. Will work on my Japanese so I can use it to my advantage. Will try to look into research firm dealing w/ Japan :)
