Majoring in Math vs. Applied Math

I am going to be a freshman next year and have been accepted as a math major. I was wondering if you would suggest doing Applied Mathematics instead? I don't really want to be a teacher or anything. Any other majors you would suggest for someone who loves both math and computers!?

Computer science major.
Electrical/Computer engineering major, etc.

Economics
Finance
Accounting

Accounting? Is that a joke?

I'll second Computer Science

Applied math and take the 'important' programming classes.

I think he's referring to the real-world applicability of the mathematics in accounting/finance.

i think applied math is more of what you want. they have the option of programming/engineering, which can lead to computers. whereas regular math, you're pretty much limited to teaching, or actuary, etc.

I would recommend talking with the dept chair in each dept. When we met with the Math dept head, he said alot of companies hire BA or BS Math majors because they know you will have skills and then train you for a specific job. Applied Math is what my d is interested in....more practical applications but, this professor said, the hiring companies take your math skills and teach you how to apply to THEIR needs.

THere is also a major at my D school Mathematical decision science which includes applied math and also actuarial degrees....it looks like there is a bit more computer classes but one college prof recommended any math major to get some programming and that makes you very marketable and more able to assist in research.

BTW, accounting is probably one of the most marketable math majors. Always hiring accountants in any economy. Starting pay isn't bad either.....Good accountants, auditors usually have strong math backgrounds.
