Majoring in Psychology - Total Waste ?

I am a rising Senior and I plan to become a psychologist, so psychology seems like the obvious choice in a major, but is it really necessary/ a good choice ?

I've heard more and more than psychology is the biggest waste of time, so whats your opinion CC? Is majoring in psychology a good idea for a future psychologist or could I just as easily pursue another major(Sayy Sexuality Studies since thats what I want to focus on in my career) and still get into grad school/become a psychologist.

If you want to be a psychologist, majoring in psychology is not a total waste.

Of course it isn’t a waste if you want to be a psychologist. ■■■■■? Was that a serious question?

Yes, it is possible to major in something other than Psychology for undergrad. Just check in with potential graduate programs to be sure you are on track with their particular requirements.

I think that the Sexualitywhatever major might be a bad idea.

What if you don’t get into grad school or something happens and you cant pay? You are stuck with a major about sexuality…

Sexuality studies?

Stick with psychology as a major and add that as a minor if it interests you.

Psychology does open other opportunities as well. My school has a Occupational Therapy program where you can complete your undergrad in Psychology and Masters in Occupational Therapy in 5 years.

It probably is a good idea to major in psychology if you want to be a psychogist. There are several specific classes you will be expected to take for grad school like experimental psychology, stats, tests and measurements, and learning and motivation. You won’t be competitive with other applicants if you haven’t taken those classes. You’ll also have to take the psychology GRE and you should score better if you have taken the courses. Also it would be a good idea to try to work with a professor doing research to enhance you changes. Psychology grad doctoral programs are very difficult to get into. I am a psychologist so feel free to ask me any questions.
