I am a high school junior going to apply to Notre Dame early action this coming fall. I plan to major in theology. I was wondering if applying to this major and having extracirriculars to back up my desire to pursue this major and having taken lots of religion in high school will improve my chances of getting in. I ask because although my SATs are in their middle 50% of accepted students, my GPA is only about a 3.75 with lots of AP and honors classes. This is really my dream school, but I do not want to waste my time at a school I have no chance of getting into. Any advice?

I would send an e-mail to admissions and ask them. The staff members are pretty honest about chances of admission, and no one posting on college confidential can really answer that question (they would just be guessing based on the same admissions figures that you already know). Best of luck because you sound like someone who would fit in well at ND! It’s a wonderful school, and it is definitely worth the time and effort to apply if admissions seems positive about your chances. Hope you find the perfect match.

It is tough to say whether or not your chances are in any way improved. My guess is that admissions would tell you that everyone is on a level playing field. Then again, only a select number of prospective students actually check Theology as a primary course of study. If you had prior research in Theology or could express your reasons for wanting to pursue a primary major in Theology in an essay then I think your chances would be improved. But I do not believe casually marking it on an application really gives you a leg up on things.

I honestly think it might. ND says that they don’t look at what you major in, but a Theology major just may give you that extra bump if you need it.

A 3.75 UW with tough classes isn’t great. You said your SAT was above the 25th %ile of a 1390. How much above?

they actually want less Arts and Letters majors I think. I don’t know why doing theo would help you. They want more Engineers and Science people if I’m thinking correctly. The Business school is super full but they tend to do well coming out so I’m not sure how big they want the B school to be.

yeah I asked one of the admissions officers and since i want to double major in finance or accounting and History ( probably American) they told me to just pick one on the supplement and it does not affect your chances of getting in. On the supplement they said that the only reason they ask you which major you are thinking about is so when you are accepted they can give you more information about it and the counselor you are assigned your first year can help you with your scheduling for the following years or give you more information about other majors you may be interested in.
