Can someone share what their experiences have been and if they share/d a simalar situation. I am going to a university, not sure which one yet, I am still desiding. I am thinking of majoring in business w/ an emphasis on management or finance. I just graduated high school and havent had any real experience or have been exposed to either of these subjects or business in general. I dont know if I would love this major, or if I would hate it because it would be too hard and not hold my interest. But I dont want to end up in this major and find out that I hate. I feel that as i get into it more, I will like it more. I have been an A and B student through high school if that means anything. Has anyone gone into a business major being iffy about and either ended up loving it, working their butt off, but enjoying it. Or have they had to change their majors because they found it not fit for them. Thanks!

My father majored in accounting, but hated it when he first took it. Later, he grew to enjoy it and spent his career as a public accountant in a government job.

I majored in business (accounting) because my parents told me I had no choice (wanted originally to be an applied mathematics major). Hated accounting, loved the other business courses. Made next to nothing when I first graduated. Went back to get an MBA at a top school (UCLA) and then started my own company. Made good money for awhile ($175K to $200K/year for 8 years) doing computer technology consulting (yes, you do have to work hard--55 to 60 hour work weeks), then blew about half of my "nestegg" in bad investments (should have taken more investment courses). Now I'm back in a specialized accounting area I love, making very good money again (only 48 hour work weeks now), and paying for my own son's college degree.

My son started as a finance major (his choice), but has decided to change his major to general management, management consulting or business law (still undecided as to which). He likes business school, but hates accounting courses. I guess some things just run in the family.

My guess is that my son's situation most closely resembles yours. My suggestion is try business--but try other areas, too. My own son enjoys history courses (especially history of great intellectual thinkers) a great deal and would switch to this if he didn't also enjoy business.

I'm an accounting major as well. As chronicled in the above post, some people love it and some people hate it. Some people who hate it grow to love it. If you're in a business major, you won't escape without a couple accounting classes. See how you like them and maybe try an intermediate one as well, to really get a feel for the material.

Either way, you will be required to take basic classes in most business fields. While you may choose a major, a typical undergrad program will ensure you get a taste of everything. See what works for you.
