majors and med school admissions

soo kind of off topic but I applied to UCs with my major being physics and my alternate major being Econ. I only did this because I had the econ prereqs done haha. Do you think If I get into a school as an Econ major I should switch back to a science major once I get there?? Some people say that science majors have a better chance at med school but I was wondering if I competed all the "pre-med" classes with A's, got internships, and a high GPA it might not matter. Maybe I will add a bio minor or something if this happens but I was just wondering what you guys thought.

i talked with a premed advisor when i went to Picnic Day (loved the 6 hour drive from SoCal to get there btw) and she said that med school adcoms just want to see you can develop and follow an interest in any given subject you choose; ++ most of the ‘premed’ ppl you meet are already in the biology department, why not set your self different from all of them;
develop a passion in economics or physics, something you can take with you to med school, you’ll learn enough biochem there anyways :slight_smile:
I browse the Student doctor network (SDN) forums, for questions such as these, check em’ out! :)

edit: there are approx 5000 (ca) medical applications(plus out of state) for about 600 spots between the UCs(that have medical school) plus the 3 privates. so standing out is a definite plus.

thanks! that helped a lot. I really wanted to go to picnic day I heard it was so fun! are you going to davis?

I can’t decide between Davis and San Diego, u?

I’m waiting to hear back haha but I can’t decide between Davis and SB

oh i c, both are great schools!; good luck! :)

is it easy to get clinical volunteering hours at SB?

see that’s what I don’t know… If I get in (I think I did because of emails i’ve been getting so we’ll see) I’m going to go down and check that out. I mean it seems like the location would be good for getting that kind of stuff but we’ll see. I know that Davis is supposed to be really good with that kind of stuff

yea, davis, irvine, and sd are suppose to be good with that kind of stuff, but i’m sure sb has opportunities (just a little harder to find them) + i’ve NEVER heard of anyone regretting going to SB, its a great and well rounded school!

yeah I know, and I really like davis but I live like an hour and a half away so I kind of want OUT of this valley lol, but we’ll see. I’m kind of hoping that I just get into one of the schools so I don’t have to make a decision but I think I’ll enjoy either one

good luck to with admissions this week then i’m sure you’ll get into both! :)

have a great weekend,
