I'm planning on majoring in Mechanical Engineering, but I'm also really interested in Materials Science & Engineering. The school I'm attending next year offers a minor in MSE, so I'm considering majoring in MechE and minoring in MSE.

However, I also got a 5 on the AP Spanish exam which gets me out of all their language classes, so it wouldn't be too difficult to minor in Spanish. I figured this would be a good way to get all of my GenEds out of the way.

So, does a major in MechE with a minor in MSE and Spanish sound like a good plan? I figure that if I wind up liking MSE better than MechE I could either switch majors or go to grad school for MSE.

What is your goal for minoring in Spanish? Is it just to have it as a minor? To prove fluency? To maintain your involvement with Spanish?

If it’s to prove fluency, know that speaking and holding a conversation is a much better way of proving your communication skills than a minor on your degree will.

To answer your question, I guess it sounds like a good plan. I mean…Spanish is Spanish. But ultimately, do what you want to do. If you want to continue taking Spanish classes because you enjoy them. Take them. If you’re doing it just to have a minor under your degree…rethink your motives.

You have time to test the waters and see what interests you more.

The minor in Spanish would be to maintain involvement in Spanish, I’ve never actually gotten to use my fluency for anything so doing some college level reading and writing would be awesome for me. Also, I have to take the humanities classes anyways, so why not get a minor along the way in something I’m interested in? Yeah, I definitely have time to figure out the MSE vs. MechE thing. Thank you!
