While there is no doubt I am excited, about going to Dartmouth, I do have a couple concerns regarding Dartmouth. One of these concerns is about my potential major. I was wondering how flexible is choosing one's major at Dartmouth? As of now, I think I wish to pursue a career in Actuarial Science. On the website I see that theres only a major in "Mathematics." Is there a way to combine majors or "make my own" major where I can combine economics, applied statistics, and even finance?

Does anyone know if a major in "Mathematics" as listed on the Dartmouth website means only pure Mathematics?

There are modified majors, as well as ways to plan your own major here. It requires special petitioning to departments and a fairly good idea of what you want to do. But is very possible.

I actually know someone who went to Dartmouth, majored in mathematics, and is now a successful actuary.

So there.

And my son is creating his own major, has petitioned the relevant departments, has met with his professors to plan this, and is ecstatic about it all. (Science, not math.)

It seems to me that at Dartmouth, if you can imagine it, someone there will help you do it.
