majors - etc.

So my daughter who is going to school a year early is very strong student.

She is gifted in art, loves English, loves working with people... and also loves teaching..
She came in undecided, and is now taking a variety of different courses through the university's college of arts and sciences..

She is feeling pressure to pick a major.. When I look at the major requirements at the fields she is possibly interested in, some of the course requirements are not listed on the website... For some of the other fields, they are listed, but they are very specific almost like on the job training... I am wondering if there's a happy in between... where she can take her humanities courses this year, and then pick major next year... but the way some of these programs are set up... it looks like (aside from meeting general requirements, which she already has), you have to be in on your major from day 1..

She is going to take some career placement/interests tests.. I just don't like having this pressure on her to pick something now (2 months into school).. She is only 17..

any advice?

Is she in college now? Every liberal arts college I am familiar with work the way you want, explore various courses through the core requirements and then declare a major, usually last semester sophomore year or early junior year. I really don’t know of any school that requires a student to declare a major freshman year. Based on her interests I would suggest she look into an art therapy major if you are looking for suggestions for that. I think the career/interest tests are a great idea. Our kids do that in a class junior year in high school and it really helped narrow down the college choices.

Some majors, especially sciences or engineering may need you to decide early as the sequence of classes is not flexible. Make sure she keeps this in mind and considers possible prerequisites such as math or science.
