Majors for Gifted yet Average

While mostly a question, I'd love to hear other people's experiences, but I am just an average student.. I get straight A's and can master (almost) everything given to me. However, I am not passionate about anything. I may be great at math, science, literature, and business, but I don't really care what my career path will be as long as I can sustain myself comfortably. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

There has to be something you lean towards? Part of selecting a school/being a strong applicant is being able to sell yourself for being accepted to study a specific thing.

Do you have any industries in mind that might interest you? Are you going to want a FT 9-6 desk job? Something that involves a lot of travel? Freelancing? Contract work?

I mean, I’d say if you think you could do well as a math/science major that those are always good to go with–no one needs another English major (if you’re not super passionate about English, it’s a useless degree b/c it’s all about how you apply it). Caveat for science: if you’re not really good at organic chem, don’t go for Chemistry, Biology or pre-med. That course BROKE people at my school. Not for the only lightly interested! What about Earth Sciences? Could you see yourself working in that field?

You might enjoy a Communications degree? It’s pretty general but not as general as English, or as specific as journalism (which attracts really passionate writers; it would be hard to stand out). Economics? I know econ majors that have gone on to do interesting things, including working for the government.

Maybe, if being gainfully employed is your end game, you should look at schools known for strong internship/study abroad opportunities. You can pick a major that gives you a solid skill set and then use the school programs to get work experience.

Keep your mind open while you take your gen eds at your college. Something will probably appeal to you.
