Majors that doesn't require biology courses

Hi guys,

I’m a prospetive meteorology and math major. I’m planning on applying this coming fall, I’m wondering what major besides these two doesn’t require biology at all. It’s my biggest weakness subject.

I have 31 credits and go to CC.

Political science? Maybe arts or drama won’t require biology

LOTS of majors don’t require Bio. Many majors just require you to fulfill the Core/GenEd req’ts as well, and usually the Natural Science requirement can be fulfilled by taking any number of courses ranging from chemistry to astronomy to geography to physics. Typically a school will list such courses with a notation, such as NS, which will indicate that the course fulfills the Natural Science Core/GenEd req’t.

I doubt business majors have to take bio. I don’t think English, History, Poly Sci, Econ, The Classics, Communications, Public Relations, Music, and Foreign Language majors have to take bio. If bio isn’t required and they attend a school with Core/GenEd req’ts, then likely those students are choosing some other NS class to fulfill their science req’t. I don’t think all engineering disciplines or Comp Sci majors require bio…some do, but some only require Chem and Physics.

Also…keep in mind that there are nonSTEM majors that may require bio, but the bio is the “bio for non majors,” so it’s easier.

Almost every major outside of agriculture, psychology (sometimes), biology, ecology focused environmental science, and biomedical engineering lacks a required biology course. Even some agricultural subdisciplines lack biology. For instance, Oklahoma State’s soil and water resources option does not force students to take a biology course.

There is nothing about Biology which should make it stand out from the rest in terms of cognitive difficulty. What this means is that you can either seek help for your “Bio anxiety” or you need to drop down a difficulty level overall

Lots of majors don’t require, lots will. It largely depends on the school as well. Some schools specifically require a biology class as one of the general education requirements. Other schools may not require it, but may require it of science majors. If the school doesn’t have a biology GenEd requirement, it’s likely that most majors there won’t either.

However, picking a major (or school) based on whether or not it requires a biology course isn’t exactly a good approach. It might be your weakest subject…which means that it’s challenging to you. This isn’t a bad thing and it doesn’t mean that it should be avoided. What will you do when your employer asks you to carry out a task that happens to be more challenging than the tasks that you’re used to?

Majors that generally do not require biology:

visual and performing arts
humanities
social studies except sometimes psychology
sciences except biology and environmental or earth sciences with biological or ecological emphasis
math, statistics, and computer science
engineering except agricultural, biological, biomedical, and possibly chemical
business and accounting
architecture

However, colleges may have biological science general education requirements. But, in many cases, they can be fulfilled by courses other than the pre-med-laden general biology courses.

I’m pretty sure that most schools require one biology/life science/health science course as part of their general education or core curriculum.

The BFA in Puppet Arts from UConn doesn’t require biology.

If you wanted to stage a production of, say, On the Origin of Species, then sure, a bio class might come in handy so the Darwin puppet knows what he’s talking about.

Physics.

(Unless you plan to do biophysics)

I’ve been having trouble with biology since high school. It took me seven tries to pass this regents (New York State exam). Biology prevented me from taking chemistry or physics In high school :frowning: when I applied to cc I apply as a geology major, and I didn’t know it required a biology class. I was an idiot and took general biology 1 this spring and had to drop it because I was researching that I didn’t need biology for meteorology. The highest grade I’ve ever got was a 69.

Bio requires a lot of memorization. Some will struggle with that.

There are lots of majors that don’t require bio. There are many other classes that can satisfy the Natural Science req’t if your major doesn’t require Bio.

My daughter is studying astrophysics and doesn’t need biology.

D was math major and briefly physics major before she changed. Neither required biology. Most schools require any lab science and don’t specify biology unless it’s for specific majors or pre-med.
