When you apply to a college, do you have to state the major you are applying to? Or do you just apply to the school, and once you get accepted, you choose a major?

It depends on the school
Some are the former, others are the latter and in others you have to “apply” for a major and get accepted, you don’t simply “choose” it.

Depends on the college. Mostly, you don’t have to choose a major before attending. The only schools I can think of where you do are Oxford and Cambridge, although the engineering colleges at some other schools do take separate applications and so you will be doing a major that the sub-college offers.
