<p>Caltech and Chicago are better than “lower Ivies” for academics. They are worse than “lower Ivies” for layman prestige (although in terms of the top 5% of the educated population, Caltech and Chicago are both more prestigious than the lower Ivies). Duke is about the same as “lower Ivies” for academics and prestige.</p>
