Make A Math Club

Hey Guys,

So I am really interested in math, and it just so happens that there is no math club at my high school. There is Mu Alpha Theta, but all they do is volunteer. I want to make a math club that prepares for math competitions. Would this be a good idea? I am scared that no one will join, but I think I know a couple people that I could persuade to join. Also, I have never done anything like creating a club before. What would we do every meeting? How do we get t-shirts? Would people actually join? I am in a couple of other clubs. and they have like a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and some have other positions. Is that necessary for a math club? Can you guys who are in a math club at your school explain to me what you guys do? Do you have officer positions? What do the officers actually do? Does anyone have any tips on making the math club?

It’s a good idea. You’d want to have a math teacher or science teacher(since they’re pretty good at math as well) to sponsor/coach the team.

How many people you’d get varies from school to school, typically people who get straight As in math without much effort are drawn towards math team.

Since this would be a new team, you’d spend your first few meetings getting everyone organized and telling them what competitions they’d be doing throughout the year. After that the time spent should be focused on practicing and a bit of funding raising.

You’d need to raise a bit of money for T-Shirts, but you can probably find a site online that makes some for a low price-tag.

No need for all that officer crap. All you really need is a leader position(and really that’s pushing it imo).

There are only two things you need for a math club: A coach who can help you guys out with the higher-level math problems you’ll encounter in competitions, and a competitions to compete in. Obviously stuff like AMC is something you can try even if you fail to create your team. Your state should have some form of math competition that you can join and your city should have one as well.

Hope this helps.
