Make Me Feel Better About Emory's Social Scene

I'm confident that Emory is my number one college choice (I applied RD and my result is pending), but there's one deterrent: I hear that many of the students can be, "dull, lifeless, with their noses in the books." I am indubitably a studier, but I also enjoy my fun time as well. Does anyone go to Emory/know people that go to Emory that can describe the personalities of the students here? Are they veritably dull and lifeless? (going to a health science and engineering magnet school, I do know that these type of people exist) What are some fun social scene gigs that people enjoy?

Were they talking about the school I go to? Lots of “partiers” here… Emory is not an engineering school or a super-duper intellectual place like UChicago, so the idea of most students always being in their books is not really true. Emory students are as well-balanced as those at other schools. Let’s not mention the amount of people that take on lighter/easier workloads so that they don’t have to work that hard. Lots of people like that so you really should take that opinion with a grain of salt. Emory does not=Georgia Tech. Since we aren’t D-1, we’ll be nothing like Duke, Vandy, or public schools in terms of school spirit, however the individuals overall are certainly not lifeless. In fact, it’s somewhat colorful with all of the blatant liberalism and in many cases activism. Witness drum circle, First Friday, and that medieval fighting (looks kind of fun) thing on the quad on Fridays and you’ll see what I’m saying. Interesting things sometimes happen at Wonderful Wednesdays too. You should perhaps come visit in the Spring (when all of the trees and stuff are back. When many people are willing to stay outside) to just witness how many people are just chilling/loafing off, playing around even though finals are creeping up lol. Also, party scene generally begins on Thursdays like most schools.

Yeah, Emory is not one of those overly academic places despite many people indeed being very serious about it. Don’t worry about it. For Emory to be like that description you gave and other similar schools not, Emory would have to be more rigorous (significantly at that) than other schools, and that’s simply not the case. It’s more or less the same, and it’s very easy to make sure that the rigor of your schedule is not that high if you don’t feel like being challenged for a semester or so as the variation in difficulty across and throughout depts is huge. There is also Class Comments which is useful in helping people choose courses with certain profs.

Bernie: That really does make me feel better! :)

There may be a few boring students who study all of the time but it isn’t a significant number. At any top school some people will complain that the students are uglier or more socially awkward than at state schools. However, I would probably say that Emory is more social than other top schools from what I’ve heard. Visit and see for yourself. That is one thing you should be able to gauge by a short visit.

Citylife: I did get to visit, but it was a cloudy, cold, Saturday. Not a good indicator lol.

You came this winter? Fail. Please try again in spring if you can. Maybe for openhouse, or admitted students’ week. They wine and dine you (so much food that I often crash the events) amid the amazing weather, which is when a campus like Emory’s looks amazing (Emory architecture+blossoming trees and plants=equals something unique compared to gothic and brick counterparts, but still extremely beautiful. Even manages to compensate for the few ugly brutalist buildings)

Bears: get a hobby.

Yeah, do something. This is kind of ridiculous. I don’t even know you. Shouldn’t you be too busy enjoying WashU instead of bashing us. Move on. You’re at another school now. Actually try to enjoy it and forget whatever happened to you here. Or at least stop posting in bitterness because none of us really cares. Obviously it isn’t happening to us, or whatever bothered you a bit too much, is not enough to make us transfer. By the way, WashU costs lots of money. Pretty sure there are lots of supper wealthy people there. You probably didn’t even know anyone from Oxford and are making blind comments about them and the others here based upon stereotypes associated with the school. You fail again to provide detailed subscription outside of single adjectives.

Enjoy pretending that the economic diversity and weird people don’t exist at WashU. In my opinion, nothing too wrong with weird (that’s subjective anyway) people. It’s a top school, do you expect a dull, homogeneous student body? It and the students are supposed to have personality. This is not some movie where are the students are rich, snobbish, preppy, and overly serious about academics and desire a very high school type social life/chain. Sounds like this is what you wanted. Hope you got it at WashU, because we certainly don’t need it or you here. Get over it and yourself. Run along you lame.

I’m officially finished with you no matter what you say next. ■■■■■■ will be ignored.

Wow, looks like I missed an interesting post.

Oh, it was the E768bears (something like that) ■■■■■ person so you didn’t anything truly insightful.

you didn’t miss, my bad.

hehe ■■■■■

Lol okay then. I do find ■■■■■■’ posts very amusing though. I like to mock their ignorance. :)

Emory has a great social scene. I go here, and there are def tons of parties. Honestly, it’s not hard to find one here. I think last semester, there were 2 weekends in which I didn’t go out.

Pardon my hijacknation of this thread but one question for bernie,

When exactly is the open house for admitted students?

Also, most of my friends go to big party schools and by comparison I have to say that Emory is able to get, far and away, the best performers to come and give concerts. Last Spring was highlighted by Kid Cudi. This past fall was highlighted by a joint concert from B.o.B and T.I. and this Spring will be highlighted by One Republic, Wiz Khalifa. All in all this is ridiculous compared to other schools. We get the cream of the crop performers and concerts are free to students and conveniently located on campus (McDonough Field).

I must agree Matt. SPC has been really solid since last year. Seems like the economy is having less of an effect on our entertainment prospects. Apparently, they are normally as good as they are now, and it was my freshmen year and 1st semester sophomore year that were anomalies (the economy had just crashed) because before I came for Essence of Emory (08’), they had apparently had John Legend and Lupe Fiasco. For a smaller D-3 school, Emory does extremely well in this arena. In fact, it’s doing well period. It seems to be holding its own against UGA and Tech this year.
begood: I believe it is in April (midish) along with other specific visitation programs like Essence, etc. If you attend, dress appropriately, it’ll be hot.

Aren’t those admitted students days only for students accepted regular decision and basically Emory is trying to recruit them to come to Emory?

I have no idea (i was admitted regular decision). I would guess so, but I would imagine even ED folks could somehow join.
