Would it make sense to double major in journalism and history? Or major in one and minor in the other? Would this be impossible to handle? Thanks. All suggestions appreciated! I want to pursue a career in journalism like radio, newspaper, or magazine.

Well, if you're going to take on an additional concentration, I'd actually suggest picking one that's relevant to the things you're likely to come across as a journalist (psychology, international studies, criminal justice, political science, health science, etc. would all be very relevant to the media. Much more so than history).

That said, if you're a huge history lover and really want to study it, I don't imagine that taking it on as a minor would be impossible at all...lots of people have minors.

I figured history involves thinking, reading, and writing skills needed; It's also my favorite subject. Also, I am not planning on journalism involving politics or health, I want to write about sports.

Ryno, I will tell you that a number of the future journalists that I went to school with way back in the day (Class of '81 at one of those elite LACs) majored in history before launching into some illustrious, and long-lived, careers in journalism. As you point out, I would think a major in history would provide you with experience in deriving the big picture from a series of facts which is what the best journalists should be doing anyway. And look at Frank Deford - he's a historian first and a sports commentator second (at least I would say so).

I say, go for it.

Thanks smile dog! More opinions please.

Anyone else.

It is useful to take history, like smile dog said, because you understand the basis of human actions (because history always repeats itself, or whatever that quote was). The only thing is, if you're planning on writing about sports, history isn't really that relevant...but if it's your passion, why not? You could always write about the history of sports...or something like that hahaha.

I know someone who majored in photojournalism and minored in something else (i think it was anthropology?), and she said it was very doable. It all depends on how much work you're planning on putting in college...

As a journalist, a minor in something else is a very good idea - history, political science, mathematics, perhaps even a foreign language. Find a subject that you think will interest you, so that it won't become too much of a burden.

A broad spectrum of higher knowledge is really essential in modern journalism, and there are some j-schools which actually require journalism majors to declare a minor for this very reason.
