Hi everyone,

I'm working in sales related position for a multi-family residential/commercial real estate company. I want to get out of this work. I have been here for nearly two years, but am burned out with the sales numbers I have to hit each month and the need to deal with client issues, on an ongoing basis.

I graduated with a degree in the humanities, and have about two years of sales experience. Are sales jobs the only option I have? I don't have much experience outside of this job. I would be interested in switching to a less stressful field, if possible.

Strong selling skills are useful in many positions, however, it can be difficult to break into a non-sales role at a new company with little work and life experience. What many people do is accept another related position that offers opportunities for advancement and lateral moves if your current company does not.

Since you only have 2 years experience, try looking for a sales position with a company that has a lot of options. Once you’ve proven yourself there you will be in a better position to apply to internal openings in other departments that interest you. You might also be promoted to sales manager and follow a management career path. Take every opportunity you can to learn about the business and other departments.

Another option is to stay where you are and take a few courses that could prepare you for a career change. Do you have any idea what you would prefer to do? Many positions require dealing with some kind of client or employee relations, so if you want to get away from that completely then your choices will be narrowed. Talk to some people in professions that interest you so that you can get a clear understanding of the job before jumping ship.
