Make-up question...

What's the trick to wearing mascara?
It looks awful on me! Black looks to dark on me, but brown is lighter than my natural color. The clear mascara I've tried stayed goo-y all the time and didn't really do anything. They all clump and just generally look bad. The one I'm trying today (Maybelline Full n' Soft in dark brown) just makes my lashes look scrawny (they're not!) and like I have on too much eye liner (which I don't use). Am I doing something wrong or have I just not found the right formula yet?

It's all about the brush. Some of them are curved, longer, bushier, etc. Try around with different products. My favorite is Clinique's High Definition Mascara. My mom buys their moisturizer and got a free mascara sample and gave it to me... it's way better than Maybelline.

Another thing you might want to look into is an eyelash curler. They really help open everything up and make your lashes look longer.

My sister has raved about Clinique mascara, but I've never been willing to spend the money to get one. The local Clinique dealer is doing a gift with purchase right now, so I might have to go check it out.

I like Loreal FeatherLash (waterproof, the regular version isn't thick enough).
Eyelash curlers are nice too, my eyelashes are super straight (just like the rest of my hair! no curl/body whatsoever).

Also, if you want to find a mascara that will stay on through anything, try Covergirl Marathon (brown stays on better than the black). It will pretty much stay on through a marathon.

Cool. I'll pick those up next time I'm at Walmart.

I guess trying to find the perfect mascara's going to be my hobby for the fall. All spring I was looking for a new foundation.

YES! This is the best thread ever! I love mascara, it is truly the secret to looking beautiful. I know mascara like the back of my hand, so here:

-if you are under the age of 50, you should use black. if you are pale as a ghost. Dark browns can be good also, but black can be worn with any hair color, skin color.

-it is extremely important that you buy a quality mascara, because it can make a huge difference!
-the best mascara brands: chanel (runs from $30), estee laudier (~$25), dior (~$30), lauren mercier (~$15)
-if you're on a budget, L'oreal and Maybelline offer the best "drug-store" all-purpose mascara

-don't go too heavy on the bottom, but a little on the bottom can be sexy
-as you apply the wand to your top lashes, you should start from the base and move the wand through the hairs firmly, then at the top, you add curl and volume by twisting the wand three times through the lashes.
-if you have straight eyelashes, get an eyelash curler, these can be found at any drug store.

good luck! i know how frustrating mascara can be! My best mascara was from Dior, but I personally think Chanel is the best.

Uhh....
Guess who hasn't spent over $7 on mascara before in her life?

Anyway, I've used a lot of different Maybelline, Covergirl, and L'Oreal mascaras before, and I'm not gonna lie, they're all the same to me.

i think mascara is the most useless type of make up ever created. i mean, think about it, you're putting crap on like 25 little hairs on your eye.

anyway, that in no way contibuted to the thread so i apologize.

lol, everything in the name of beauty, huh? :D

Clinique has great mascara, and maybelline has something called XXL (i think) that makes them huge. But i rarely use it anyway, because my eyelashes are really long, so if i ad on mascara, my lashes scrape against my glasses.

Yes, I'm very much under 50! I think the problem with black not looking good is that I'm really pale. Plus, I have darkish brown hair that emphasises it.

I'm actually kinda starting to like the brown I'm wearing. It's not flaking off and I've done all sorts of things to torture it (rubbed my eyes, plucked my brows, cried from plucking my brows, etc).

Then again, there are all of those poor little blonde girls that have eyelashes you can't see at all unless there's (colored) mascara on them...

Also, I'm really pale and wear black.

I think it's the dark hair with the paleness that makes it look odd. My sister is paler than me and can wear black mascara and look great in it, but she's strawberry blonde.

How long have you been wearing mascara?

Maybe you're just not used to the look.

true. i guess that's a good reason. but still...for the other 99% (give or take) of women w/ dark enough eye lashes...i say put the mascara down

^ mmm, I strongly, strongly disagree with you. What is all this negativity projected toward mascara? It's harmless! Everyone should try it for a week, at least, and then form an opinoin. I have a feeling that those of you on here who say it is pointless have probably never tried it.

^wrong.

i've tried it many times, a lot for formal events where my mom or friends would insist i wear it. i didn't do it kicking and screaming, but to me it's the most pointless type of make up. nothing against people who wear it. that would mean i hate all my girlfriens and female relatives.

well, some people don't need it, maybe you are one of those few, lucky people? In any case, it can be flattering (okay, depending on what your definition of beauty is) on most women.

Clinique is good (I used to only buy their make-up), but I love my Bare Escentuals mascara. I have "Big Tease" in black and it's seriously better than any mascara I've ever used (all of their make-up works really well for me and now is all I will buy).

The wand is really cool, too. Here's a link so you can see what it looks like since I can't think of how to discribe it...

http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P133910

You should try it if you don't mind spending $15 for great mascara.

Mascara hates me. I wear contacts and they're usually fine all day, but whenever I wear mascara they get dry and itchy within a few hours and it doesn't go away until i either take them out or take the mascara off. I guess little invisible bits of it must flake off and go into my eyes. I've tried lots of different brands, ones that are supposed to be for sensitive eyes even, still doesn't work. I certainly can't justify spending $20 to try again right now, either.
