Congratulations to all those who have joined the Pomona College family!

Move in day is on Sunday, Aug. 22. There are still rooms with double beds available at the Doubletree which is one of the only hotels that is close. Plan to arrive on the Friday or Saturday before. There are no activities for parents after Sunday early evening.

I have been reading your posts and not feeling that I have anything to contribute except a recommendation that you book a room today. Also, if you are able, arrive a little early so you can enjoy the area.

Best wishes to all. You'll love Pomona College.

pianomom – thanks for the information, and the nice welcome. H and I lived in Upland for a short time back in the 80’s, and I look forward to visiting the area again… often! (I can imagine S rolling his eyes now!!)

Another hotel, further from Pomona College than the Doubletree (about 5 miles from campus) but less expensive and with great reviews on tripadvisor, is the Comfort Inn Pomona.
Just out of curiosity, where are you all coming from?

For us living in San Diego, we are only a 2-hr drive away to Claremont. Seeing there are parent activities, we’ll probably book the Doubletree as well, just in case… And won’t that be great to finally put faces to names on CC at Orientation? Really looking forward to it…

If you’re a risk-taking and frugal type, Hotwire often has really good rates on the Sheraton Fairplex. It’s a really nice all-suites hotel (king bed in one room and pullout sofa in the adjoining space), perfect for family travel. It’s about 10 minutes from Pomona. If you book on Hotwire, it’s a 3.5 star hotel in the “East Los Angeles County” area, and usually goes for between $65-75. But buyer beware: you don’t get to know the actual hotel until after you’ve paid, and it’s nonrefundable. That’s where we’re staying for move-in weekend.

oclement, we’ll be coming from Santa Rosa, (Sonoma County) CA., about 55 miles north of San Francisco. It’s usually about an 8 hour drive to Claremont, but it has taken us up to 10 hours, depending on traffic. We’re leaving on Friday morning so we can have a day to relax in Claremont before orientation. Anyone else going early?

We’ve made reservations starting Saturday night, but I have no idea when (or how) we’re getting there. D threatens to bring a ton o’ stuff to college with her, so I’m thinking we might just drive down from the Seattle area. I wouldn’t mind an excuse to poke around LA a bit; my older child will be a junior at USC, so I think I’m going to be making a few trips south this next school year.

Congrats to the parents whose kids have recently chosen Pomona! My D was admitted ED, so we’re already used to that feeling of relief and certainty. But this reminds me how lucky she is to be in such good company next year.

Whenever we visited campus, we stayed at the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. It’s an all-suites hotel, so staying there during move-in weekend was a comfortable experience with D sleeping on the sofa bed in the livingroom and having separate entrances to the bathroom. PLUS - there is a Pomona College discount pretty much year-round. Make sure to mention it when you call the hotel directly - not the toll-free number for Starwood Hotels.

congrats to all students and parents thereof! my D has decided Ponoma over Notre Dame-- was not an easy choice, but she’s settled on it. 4 of her high school classmates are going as we heard last and another is going to Scripps, so it’s like a caravan from the East.

Thanks Pianomom for the link. As to where to stay, when we did admit-students weekend we stayed at the Best Western on Vineyard in Ontario. The rates were really good and it’s 10 minutes east of the Claremont Colleges going on Rt. 10. 5 minutes from Ontario Airport. Had a small outdoor pool. I’m partial to Best Western as it is.

No doubt we’ll be wearing name tags at some event or another when we go out with our kids. We should put our college confidential names on our nametags as well. I’ll look out for Bengalmom, NJMom of 2, and all the rest of you. It might be fun to see the faces behind the blogs. What do you think, Dudes and Dudettes?

ayzdad: Dude, that’s great! It’s an exciting time for parents and kids alike. Having four classmates at Pomona should really help to ease the transition for your daughter. I like the idea of putting our CC monikers on the name tags. Hope to meet you, and other CC parents, there!

Okay guys, I can’t put my CC name on there without humiliating my daughter. But what about a secret code - like back to back C’s - that would invite others in the know to ask us to identify ourselves?

Ok… I will put “CC” under my name on my nametag. (I think both S and H would disown me if I put BengalMom anywhere on me!)

Do you think that is an unobtrusive way to identify ourselves? I hope you all ID yourselves in some way so we can find each other! I would love meet a few parents of my S’s classmates.

Recognizing me is rather easy my screen name on CC is my first initial and my last name… and since I’ll be wearing a name tag at orientation, you can easily pick me out of the “crowd”… See you all in August.

BTW, my D received her official class of 2014 letter along with the Pomona College car sticker yesterday… yay!!!

oclement - My daughter got hers today. I just love the official-ness of it all! Bought my husband a Pomona sticker and a Dad Says: Buckle Down and Study Hard mug for his birthday, so this one is for my car. YAY!
