Hi guys! So, I'm applying to various highly selective colleges (Georgetown, UPenn, NYU, Chicago, Columbia, etc) and I'd like to make a portfolio. However, I have NO idea how to make it, so I desperately need your HELP!!

I've written reports/reflections about my volunteer work, expedition trips, and extracurriculars with pictures.

Here are some examples:

Trekking/Horseback riding in the Andes

Hiking Mount.Kilomanjaro

Volunteering at a womens shelter for two years (about 240 hrs)

Band experience (Lead flute/Captain of marching band)

Choir (Head of choir)

Human Rights Group (President. Currently raising money to build a school in Africa)

AIDS Awareness Committee (President. Raised more than 8 grand in three months)

Winner of Duke of Edinburgh (very prestigious) Bronze/Silver/Gold Award

Is it okay to write up my experience in various areas in a portfolio? Or is it just art/photography stuff??

Please help! :)

Your experiences in other areas would be suitable for a resume, which you can include alongside your portfolio if you wish. =)

For many schools on your list (I’m pretty sure Columbia) they only want extra things, like a portfolio, if it’s an art portfolio. They don’t want you to submit things that you put on your application anyways (such as awards, experiences, etc.). The only people, usually, who should be submitting a portfolio are students who want to be considered based on their merit in producing artwork. I remember some schools specifically saying that if you turned in a portfolio or resume, they’d just throw it out.

What about fashion sketches? I’ve been drawing them since when I was 15 and can I make a portfolio out of them? Would it be beneficial even if I don’t want to major in fashion?

^No, do not send your fashion sketches. Do not send the other information you listed either. It is irrelevant. Simply include a well written ONE page high school resume.

I don’t see why a portfolio is irrelevant. Check to see if your colleges want one first, and if they do, be sure to follow their specified instructions. =)

It is irrelevant. The OP is not applying as an Art major, Fashion major, Film Major, Graphic Design Major, or Music Major.

Her experiences (community service, travel, band, choir, and awards) should be condensed into a ONE page high school resume. The admission’s dept. will include the resume when reviewing the application.
