Hello there. Currently I am at University of St Thomas in Minnesota 45 minutes away from where i grew up. I have no true issue with it, its just little things adding up that make me want to transfer. Bigger (educational) reasons are that being a private school, the core curriculum is too religion heavy if I ever wanted to transfer, and the sciences im looking for arent the strongest here. Other reasons is that it is more conservative of a school than what I may like, and the friends from high school arent people I need any longer, and nothing is tying me down. Now, I'm not the " I dont need anything, Im strong willed, I hate everything around here and Im moving out!!!" kinda person, but at the same time, I feel that this may be a time in my life to be somewhere different. Yes there are schools around here Im looking at, but Ive looked out of state as well. I see that SUNY ESF school could be a good fit for me, and other OOS schools with mid range tuition. Another thing Ive looked at a bit is Canada. Some schools are horrible with international, but some are very reasonable. I see a place like Vancouver, or Vancouver Island and I just feel like it would be such a different place to be and live for college years. Am I just dreaming, or is it natural to want to venture out a bit in college years? I am not dependent on home, Ive gone home just for being very very sick and Thanksgiving. I enjoy being independent, and my general question is, do you think it would be wise for me transfer and look for out of state(country) schools if affordable? And another critical thing is, say if a school is the right size, a nice area, and all, but maybe not the strongest in a field (good, but not incredible). For the whole package, would you still feel its worth transferring? Feedback is deeply appreciated. Thanks!

I really don’t think you’re a “dreamer” at all. Ironically, I’m looking at the University of Minnesota in a few years to leave my current place. I’m from Atlanta and go to a university in Macon. I’m transferring back up to Atlanta in the Spring, but my ambition is to go to Minnesota and maybe leave Atlanta one day. You’re definitely not alone.

I think, if you’re looking for something new, go for it! If you really don’t have anything typing you down, why not give it a try? In a way, there’s something exciting about venturing out. It’s all what you want to do though. Make sure you find the right program for you wherever you go. I love Minnesota because it has an incredible history program. I’m a “homebody” if you will, so it would take something major such as that to get me to move, but eventually it might be worth the adventure.

I don’t know you personally, but I say -what the heck? Take the risk.
