Making it More Affordable

My parents have agreed to let me go to Pitt and pay for it, despite the out of state tuition and receiving only a $3000 grant. However, I feel a little guilty since it's quite a chunk of change. What are your guys tips and for making Pitt more affordable and is there the chance of me getting more financial aid/scholarship money after the May 1 deadline?

Also, who else is athletic training/Pre-physical therapy?

1- Be really involved in your campus politics (i.e. RSA- Resident Student Association) your freshman year, because
2- It will help your chances of being an RA for sophomore year

If you can become an RA, room & board are provided by Pitt (so that saves you almost $8k a year).

It’s unlikely that you will get more financial aid.

3- Apply to work in a research lab (depending on major). You can find some labs in the pre-med/sciences that need workers and will be paid about $7-$10/hr for work. Over the course of a month, if you work 10-15 hours a week, that’s almost $500, or $4000 in a year.

4- Apply for an off-campus job. Lots of kids do it to help pay for college, you wouldn’t be the first.

You can also cut some costs by moving off campus after a year or two on campus. By sharing an apartment, your room costs will be much less than a dorm, and you can also buy wisely and save on food.

You could also try to manage your coursework so that you graduate early.

^To add to above suggestion, if you go home for summer, you could take a summer course(s) at your local in state university especially for Gen Ed requirements. This may reduce the time you need at Pitt. Even if you don’t go home due to a job, it is possible. - my kid is taking an online course at his state university while in staying at Pitt this summer.

Apply for on-campus jobs too!
Working 10hrs/week isn’t a lot and probably will help your study skills (because hours and hours of freetime actually makes it harder to keep motivation up, in my experience).

Once you can log into my.pitt.edu , check out the futurelinks link on the bottom right. That’s where all on-campus jobs are posted as well as some internships, summer jobs and real jobs for grads.
