@ivyclimber117 it’s of low importance, my parents have saved well for my education
This being said, every univrtsity except rochester is between $30k-40k / yr without aid, and rochester is $60k.
So that is a factor
It sounds to me like Rochester is your first choice, which is ironic since Rochester is my first choice too. Decisions came out yesterday for a lot of people, but if you’re like me and didn’t get one, there’s no need to worry. They send them out in batches, so not having heard on Day 1 doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been denied.
That being said, if you were deferred from Binghamton, I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Rochester. CS at Rochester is extremely competitive.
The scholarship from Dayton is very nice and should be considered. Purdue would be quite expensive since its OOS. I honestly can’t make this decision for you, but I would probably choose Dayton or Purdue if you can end up affording it.
My husband major was computer science. He hires people to work in his team. He looks at their qualifications first (actually HR goes through the applications first and tosses ones that do not fill the need ) and not chosen by which university they graduated from. The compant hires international as well. Job experience is the most important. 1 or 2 years experience and he hires starting around $90,000+.
I would pick the least costly university. No reason to pay double the cost of Rochester for the other colleges. You are not going to get paid more for the same job that others are applying for b/c of your choice of school.
While we have saved for education, but it doesn’t mean cost isn’t a factor. It is, especially since we don’t qualify for any financial aid. Only merit aid. Our son did get merit aid from all the acceptances, except for one. He chose the school he wanted to attend the most and it happened to be the lowest cost to us even without merit aid. As parents we want a good education for our children, but we also want to be able to stretch out the money that is available. Just something to keep this in mind especially if there are other siblings.
When do you hear back from VTech?
If your parents can pay for URochester without debt, keep it in play. It’s a cut above the others and since they’ve saved for this situation, it shouldn’t be crossed out of the list until you’ve heard from all your colleges.
Stony Brook is well respected for CS, although it seems to have a “suitcase” reputation (i.e. a reputation that many of the resident students head back to their families on weekends). Whether that is true or not, you may have to investigate more.
