I want to work in the upstream petroleum industry, but I didn't get any of the internships I applied for (maybe because I'm a sophomore?)

What should I do this summer to help my chances of getting one next year?
I looked at petroleum courses (like petroskills) but those don't look appropriate for an undergrad.

Sophomore status might be a part of it, but you have to remember that the upstream side of the business got absolutely slaughtered in the past few months. Many companies have cut capital funding, which probably means hiring fewer interns as well. Hope oil prices improve and try again next year. Useful classes…of course keep going with your major and maybe try a geology course or something like that.
