Making The Right Choice (help needed)

I have a 570 critical reading and 580 math sat score, with a 510 writing score. I'm going to by a senior after the summer, and I have around a 3.7 grade point average. I do not know my class rank at the moment, but estimate it to be around in the top 20% of the graduating class. I'm a member of the National Honor Society and have done some volunteer work. I would like to attend a college somewhere in Pennsylvania, and I would like to pursue business as my major. I plan to go into Finance specifically, but maybe Marketing or possibly another branch of business if interested. For grad school, It would be my dream to attend an ivy league business school such as Wharton or Columbia Business School. What types of colleges do you think I could pursue with my current resume? I was thinking Drexel (Lebow School of Business) or possibly La Salle University. Do any of you have any suggestions? I can possibly go out of the state if I feel the school can really help me to achieve my goals. Thank you.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Penn State, Villanova

Those are two schools I was considering but both would require me to score about 100 points higher on my SATs if I remember correctly.

Gettysburg does not require SAT scores and they have business. A potential option if you don’t mind an LAC.

Thanks for the suggestion. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

Surprisenly the only top universities I know in Pennslyvania is:
University of Pennslyvania
Pennslyvania State University- University Park
Drexel University

Indiana University has a great business program (ranked 11th in the 2009 U.S. News and World Report business rankings), and if you can bump your gpa up by 0.1 and your sat crit reading and math by ~100 total you could get some decent scholarship money as well.

Maxellis, thank you for the suggestion. I need to look into that university now to see what they have to offer and to see if there needs fit mine. And Coollbrezzer, with my SAT score and GPA would you consider Drexel to be my main choice for school if i stayed within Pennsylvania? Upenn seems too far out of reach and I’m not interested in PSU.

^
Well I’m actually not sure what Drexel is well known for, though I think your chances of admission are about average.

I was thinking the same about my chances of admission. I’m just trying to find the best undergrad business schools to go to with my current grades, and I am still determining whether or not I plan to go away or stay close to family and friends, which is a big factor.

I looked a couple of schools up, and found some that haven’t been mentioned yet. How about Albright College, Clarion University, Widener University, or Seton Hill University? Your scores are on par for all of these schools. I think Widener would be a great choice for you though.

Excellent suggestions. This summer I really need to explore some of these campuses and realize that I must choose one of these as my potential home. Thank you for the great choices though tonk. I had my eyes set on Drexel or the University of Scranton but never really looked into schools like the ones you mentioned. Also, maxellis I did some research on Indiana and the Kelley School of Business and like you said it is a legitimate top business school. I would like to possibly research more and take a trip to the campus.

Pitt has an up-and-coming business program. Definitely better than Drexel or La Salle but its in the other side of the state. However, you’ll be getting in-state tuition and a nice, clean, fun, and rapidly changing city too.

If you would consider Indiana, which does have a good business program, you might want to look into Miami University of Ohio. They have a great business school and it is a little closer to Pennsylvania. Miami has a beautiful campus and is a smaller school than Indiana. They are about 2 hours apart if you were to visit. You may have the grades for Miami but I am not sure what you need these days to get into their business program. They also are building a brand new building for their business program.

Wake Forest? Callaway is a pretty good business school and they are the only top 30 school that is SAT-optional.

TPL09, Pitt was another school I was looking into but I didn’t know much about their business program. Thank you everyone for the ideas and suggestions.

I would also like to ask a question about applying to a certain business school. Take for example Kelley Business School of Indiana University, or Wharton of Upenn. When you apply, would you apply directly to the Kelley Business school for example instead of Indiana University Main Campus?

When you apply to IU and intend to go into business, you do not apply directly to Kelley. If you indicated that you were going into business and have the correct SAT and GPA and class rank, then you will be a direct admit to Kelley. Otherwise, you apply to Kelley later on.
