Making Things

I'm an EA admit. I know that UChicago doesn't have an official engineering program. Can I still find people here (not necessarily in the college, just nearby) to build stuff with? Participating in the robotics team at my school has been awesome and I'd like to continue some sort of team engineering in college.

Um, have you looked at the Scav Hunt lists? Scav Hunt is what brings engineers out of the closet for team engineering at Chicago. It’s limited, basically, to a few weeks of activity, but the actual Scav Hunt is a very, very intense four days of round-the-clock making things.

Also, given the enthusiasm with which people build ambitious things during Scav, there has to be the possibility of building stuff at other times, too.

I have the same concerns. I’m sure there’s a club for it. If there isn’t (which would surprise me), we can start one (I’m an EA admit as well). My main doubt about Chicago is that they don’t have engineering, but I’ve gotten over that knowing that I can go to engineering grad school, and that there are plenty of clubs for my interests.

S at Chicago was impressed with the intensity of his friend’s first year of engineering at Stanford. I would think that it’ll be hard to compete for engineering grad school with people that come from such strong programs.

On a trip to UChicago, I was told that students interested in Engineering could major in Physics and that there were a few other classes that were Engineering related that would help prepare you for graduate school.

OMG OMG IF YOU GUYS START SOMETHING LIKE THIS, PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED THANK YOU!!

I love to build things!

You guys might be interested in knowing that we have a group (in the process of becoming a registered student organization) called the Winter Engineering Club. They meet sporadically after big snow falls to build forts, sculptures, and giant snowballs. They seem to have fun!
