My son (an incoming freshman) is considering participating in a national athletic championship in October which would mean he would miss a couple of days of school. This would include missing a chemistry lab. Is it possible to make up labs? I'm wondering if choosing miss two days of school would have a highly detrimental effect on his academics. Any current students have advice?

In chem 151, you get to drop a lab. I do not believe Kit Mao allows make up labs, but she might. If she does, it would have to be through a WashU competition.

Also, are you sure he’ll miss lab? Because of the huge number of people taking chem this year, they’re changing 151 so that you have lab every other week. (also, since it’s changing, the drop policy may be changing too).

See this for the schedule:

Another suggestion is that since they are doing off-weeks, they may allow make up labs. However, I’d have your son email Dr. Mao to see if that’s possible.

Johnson - Thanks so much. It appears he will not have chem lab the Thursday he is considering being gone. I didn’t realize labs were every other week. He may change his mind after he gets a feel for the course load, but it is nice to know that it could possibly work.

More importantly…he’ll want to check his midterm dates for all of his classes once he gets to campus before deciding. Some professors might allow a student to make up a midterm if given enough notice, but a majority probably won’t. Otherwise missing two days of normal class is no big deal.

Thanks so much. I will let him know.
