Making your own major?

Hi, everyone! I've been lurking on these boards for months and now that I am actually getting ready to apply for colleges, I decided I'd register and, y'know, post.

I've been interested in creating my own major once I apply to college, and my interest has led me to write an article for a local magazine about the subject. Thus, I come to you folks in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone: find out for both myself and my article what a student-designed major is all about.

Has anyone here ever done this sort of thing? What's it like? Did it take away from your social life? Did it seem harder than the traditional majors your friends were doing? Do you regret it?

I've been considering it. Duke offers "Program II," which makes it extremely easy to create your own major.
