male dorms: what are their reputations?

Hey i was just wondering out of curiosity if a current student or recently graduated student could give a little insight on the general personalities of the male dorms.. as in what are they like, what do they do, what's the typical dorm member like, characteristics of the guys in the dorm, reputation etc. and please make it as unbiased as possible.

so basically you’re asking for an unbiased stereotype? … Is that even possible?
I find it interesting that there’s a notion out there (I’m not talking about you specifically, everyone seems to think it) that you can assume what a person is like based off of the dorm she/he is from. I suppose its true that the dorm as a whole may have a “party” or “more laid back” atmosphere, which is usually due to the tolerance of the rector or the traditions of the dorm. But as far as the “typical dorm member”–from my experience, the atmosphere of the dorm tells nothing of the guys that are from that particular dorm when you meet them on an individual basis. Something to keep in mind is that for the most part, the assignment of dorm is completely random the first year-and a majority of students tend to stay in the dorm they’re assigned until they move off campus or graduate. Sure, the atmosphere may affect them a little bit-but I don’t think it does to the point where one can assume the personality of a male student based off of the dorm they’re in.

I think what you’re looking for is the “atmosphere” that I mentioned. Try to stay away from the typical dorm member or the characteristics of the guys in the dorm. It was a bit long winded I know-I apologize for the venting. So based off of my own observations, I can say something about two dorms…any other statements I could make would only be based off of the guys I’ve met from there and as stated, that can’t be related to the dorm as a whole.

Sorin has great camarederie and can get away with a lot and cause change (an excellent example of this is the pep rally they boycotted which was the final straw for a call for a change in the pep really format)

Morrissey has tended to be more traditional but some freshmen this year have upped the amount of parties

Keep in mind that dorm assignments are random, as jonoam said, but the dorms do tend to have personalities of their own. Here’s what I can think of:

Zahm: As far as campus reputation goes, this one’s easy. A fairly common chant (presumably started by another male dorm) goes “ole ole ole ole…Zahm’s gay Zahm’s gay…” However, they have embraced this (and join in themselves) and tend to rally around being different from most of the other dorms. They have also been trying to get their official name changed to Zahm House. Twice a year, residents run naked through the student center (known as the “bun run”).

Sorin: Very fratty. And they do get away with a lot. There are very few rules actually enforced in Sorin, which has its pros and cons… The “Quint” is probably the worst offender, and hazing does go on in the selection process for those who want to live in this room. Oldest guys dorm (unless you count St. Edward’s which is technically older, but hasn’t always been a dorm…you decide), so it has a long history. They once tried to secede from Notre Dame (hence the Sorin “College” name) in protest of the Vietnam War. That is, until the university cut off their utilities. They caved pretty quickly after that… For some reason they feel the need to celebrate this every year.

Alumni: Also acts like a frat, hence the Greek letters spelling “DOG” on the side of the building. Twice a year, residents run naked through the library.

Carroll: Very very far away (on “Far Quad” - yes, like in the movie Shrek - the people who wrote it lived in Carroll), but the big rooms supposedly result in some great parties, though I’ve never actually been inside the dorm…

Morrissey: Technically “Morrissey Manor” despite its well-known small rooms. Highest transfer rates in and out. The more reserved, religious types tend to transfer in, partiers tend to transfer out. A few more parties in the past year or so, but its still known as the dorm where fun goes to die…

Dillon: Biggest guys dorm on campus. Not really sure about a definitive reputation per se, but their rector is great, they have milkshake mass every Thursday, and I know a lot of cool people who live there. In past years, they have hosted my favorite dorm event- the Dillon Pep Rally, which was unfortunately canceled this past fall.

That’s all I can come up with for now.

I will tell you hands down the best dorm here is St.Edwards. Yes we are the oldest dorm, and should have the most tradition and hazing etc., but we are the most laid back people on campus. We also have some the biggest rooms on campus, and if you include the size of our ceilings we probably have the biggest. We are a small dorm, so you will get to know everybody, and have a real sense of camaraderie. We live right next to the Main Building, so most rooms have really nice views.

thanks for those responses…haha and sorry about the “typical person” question. i meant to say atmosphere but was having trouble thinking of the word. other opinions?

i forgot about siegfried. they really push the athletics. case in point, they had tryouts for the xc team to see who the top 5 guys to be scored would be. due to tradition and reputation i suppose

I can speak for Carroll…it’s almost a fraternity atmosphere, moreso than any of the other dorms simply because the size(100 guys) allows you to know every single person in the dorm reasonably well. The old slogan about Carroll parties was “making it worth the walk” or “so far away the rules don’t apply.” That being said, it really isn’t that far at all. At any state uni, it would be considered very close. I’d say its comparable to the mod quad dorms in terms of how its distance will factor into an average day, the difference is that it’s by itself. It also has high ceilings like steds, in fact the front side of the dorm has about 14ft ceilings

A little info:
Siegried may have had XC tryouts to see who would score, but Zahm decided to score the 5 seniors (not all of whom were the top 5 runners) and still won. I’m just saying…
And Zahm did get its name changed to “Zahm House.”

Zahm=sodomy. Keough= brothers, scholars, champions…I’m just saying.

hahahaha…
