Male/Female ratio, and atmosphere how bad is it really

Hi guys,

I’m applying to Georgia Tech, and if I get accepted I will think about attending. But a big negative aspect is the Fact that it is so much a Tech school. Which has an impact on male female ratio (68/32 ?) and stuff like that. Is the atmosphere really nerdy ? And is the Male Female ratio really scary as it seems on paper ? I’m kind of scared that the number of girls is already lower, and because it’s a tech school, most of these girls will be asian and/or nerdy, not that i don’t like asian, but i like diversity. Which is why I like a school where people do other stuff than Math all day.

Btw if I go there it would be for aerospace engineering.

Thanks for your replies

I wouldn’t spend any time worrying about that until saturday, as you know it is a reach anyway.

@Alfonsia, i’m not worrying, i’m getting informed. And I got into UMich which was also supposed to be a Reach, I’m planning, I don’t want to be in a rush when I make a decision. I think I have good Chances of getting in GT, so i’m thinking about it.

Lol appreciate your honesty. Asian here.

But anyway, I think the lack of girls is probably worst felt in engineering because that’s the general trend. Environmental, Biomed and Industrial usually have more equal ratios. Comp is the worst.
This is pretty recent:

I’m a girl and I got in as an undecided engineering major during the EA round. I’m already thinking about switching to a science major once I start so that I have enough time to take more courses in pol sci and/or be around people who have time to think about things other than engineering.

edit: replace **** with reddit

They sau that this year, the gender ratios are much more proportional in applications and last year’s matriculated class. Seems that it’s only skewed for grad students and engineers perhaps

Thanks for your replies @Enthouse I don’t have a problem with asians, I just want it to be diverse. I don’t want to go to a school with a majority of asians that’s all, just as i wouldn’t like a school 100% white.

@meriks‌
Yeah yeah I know I get it, I was just teasing you.

I was wondering about this too- even though the admissions team says that they admitted a record number of women this year. I’ve also gotten into Umich and GT for engineering… but I feel like Umich will be so much more fun/well rounded. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. It is going to be a tough decision to make.
Congrats to everyone who got what they were hoping for!

@Enthouse ok :slight_smile:

@nosafetyschools yep… Tough decision

I’m sort of leaning away from Georgia Tech as well right now because I’ve heard the load is too much, regardless of major. I talked to a business major there and he said he studies 3 hours a day to do well, which could be an exaggeration but still. I got into UIUC too but the only thing that’s stopping me from picking that is the HUGE size (enrollment is ~44,000) and the fact that it isn’t close to a big city so it’s inconvenient for my parents to visit -_-

@nosafetyschools‌ hey! I have the same acceptances as you! Which one are you leaning towards?

@Enthouse Got into UIUC as well, just visited today. It’s a nice place.

@Enthouse, @nosafetyschools,

Frankly, I do not know which is worse …seeing all your non-Engg. or non-CS brethren having a good time while you are slogging (UMich, UIUC, UTA) or being equally miserable across the board (GTech, CMU) ;)) Basically, there is no free lunch! You all are the best and brightest to have these options and it is expected that you continue to strive and perform at this level in the college arena.

Good luck !

@nosafetyschools‌ @benjamineu‌ same acceptances, and even though the gender ratio may be a concern at gtech, the $60k sticker price at umich is a lot bigger concern

@i012575

Haha not sure I think I might go for the latter but I’ll wait till my northwestern decision comes before I think about this too much. I’d pick Northwestern in a heartbeat :smiley:

Enthouse: the typical load at decent colleges is 2h30 of work for 1 hour of class, can go as low as 2h per class and as high as 3-4h per class depending on how well you handle the subject, how fast you work, how prepared you are (ie., taking calc 1 after taking AP Calc BC is not going to be the same workload as taking calc 1 after Honors Precalc.) TYpically the first week is low (1h2h) and the last month is insane (ie., midnight breakfasts, short naps, etc.)
