Male to Female Ratio a Problem?

So, I'm attending Missouri University of Science & Technology (Rolla, MO) in the Fall, and I have noticed that disturbingly, the Male to Female ratio is like 5 males to 1 female. Anyone else find this as a problem?

It’ll probably be a huge sausage-fest.

Actually, yes. The acronym for the college is S&T, AKA, sausage and testicles. Yay.

Are you male or female?

Some male-dominated colleges have a female-majority college nearby and they regularly have joint social programs, etc. Many colleges that stress education and health care have a large female majority. If there is a partner college nearby, it may not be so bad. But if the college is in a more isolated location, it may not be very much fun for the guys.

It’s a STEM college, what did you expect?

I’m a male. And I kinda hoped there’d be more female accompaniment lol.

^^ That only has schools with 10k+ students. Michigan Tech has a 3:1 ratio. My best friend goes there and doesn’t really see it as a problem. He has plenty of friends from both sexes. Then again, he’s also gay so he’s not really concerned about the lack of females for dating so… there’s that.

ETA: It’s on a different list on the same website… http://www.citytowninfo.com/cti/test/highest-male-to-female-ratio-medium-colleges-and-universities.shtml

Lol the school I’m at is like 65% female. I’m a guy.

lol. Wish there were more females than males at my school. And no, I am not gay, so it is definitely a problem :/

Look on the bright side… at least there are girls.

Forty years ago, you might have been going to an all male school.

Yeah, it is kind of a big deal haha. My school has a 1:1 ration; however, in my CS department it’s probably like 10:1.

There were barely 4 girls in my Data Structures class last semester, out of 65 students.

yea I realized it was 10k+ schools. The 10k- schools look quite a bit more dramatic… Those poor boys at West Point…

I was under the impression that:

mostly boys = good for girls
mostly girls = good for boys

Quite possibly, though I’m not sure if mostly boys would be good for anyone… I’ve seen various studies showing that the most violent/volatile societies are those that have more males than females, and that the instability and violence stems from the large numbers of frustrated young men who can’t find “mates.” I forget where I was reading this (Time? Somewhere like that, I think), but the sociologist was worried about India, given the practice of gender-selective abortion that was going to have some serious repercussions within the next decade or two.

If this translated to a college atmosphere, it could be a sexually-frustrated, tense atmosphere if the difference was dramatic. Even if it was overwhelmingly girls, it might get hormonal or something. In either case, there could be mitigating factors (nearby schools with lots of the opposite gender), but I’d say the best for everyone (both girls and boys) would be roughly equal numbers.

^ Haha, I immediately thought of my school. I don’t think our ratio is too far off of equal, but sometimes it seems that way. The building I lived in last year was crazy violent every weekend with people breaking windows, mirrors, and destroying bathrooms (I’m talking completely - like toilets shattered and sinks pulled off the walls). I just got an email charging me for a bunch of damage that everyone has to pay for (I think our grand total was just below $20,000). It was fun though.

Well, I live in an all male dorm… water fountains are regularly ripped off the walls and windows are periodically shattered. But I think it has more to do with people getting drunk and being ****ed off at the rector, rather than the explanation I gave for unbalanced societies.

You’re right. From my experience at a 60% female college, squeals are normal, drama is at an intense level, and the guys tend to be sissies.

One of the schools I considered was UNC-Greensboro, which has a 66% Female/34% male ratio. I don’t know why it’s like this, but it was VERY noticeable around campus.

The school I’ve chosen (Appalachian State) is a little more even at 52% Female/48% male.

David, how did you notice it? Some of my friends at different schools have said it’s different depending on the college…

Sitting in a class, (and it was an Intro sociology class, I’m not aware of a female bias for Sociology in general) walking around the main parts of campus (the dining hall is where it really first caught my eye) Also, all the tour guides except one were women (just like at Greensboro College, all the tour guides were Theatre majors, who a school selects for that job can say a lot about them)

I didn’t, as you commented on, notice an unusual amount of guys that aren’t ‘masculine’ (I toured the Theatre department to, so there’s that), plenty of guys were athletes, in frats, etc.
