Malware on College Confidential (with Android)

If I visit College Confidential, when I leave the site, I get a pop up with sound and this message:

I do not click the “OK”.

I’ve run a full Kapersky security scan on my phone and there are no reported viruses.

This does not happen on any other site – only the CC forum.

This is malicious adware:

This pops up every single time I visit CC on the phone and try to leave. Again, no other sites – just CC.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Yes. It’s driving me nuts. Mines about Amazon or free phone

But different url

This isn’t the first time I’ve run into problems with the CC site. So it looks like this website is infected with malware, possibly carried via its advertising.

I cleared out the storage on my device and the problem stopped, so I am guessing that some sort of file was downloaded or cookie was set along with some particular ad.

Same here, a while back. and the problem recently returned.

I have an iPhone so it’s not just android. So clear history etc? And yes only CC site

Well, start with clear history. If it is tied to a specific ad, it would come back if and when that ad is reloaded — but maybe the people who run CC can figure out the source and eliminate it.

Yes only CC and I close the CC tab, go to another, open history clear the offenders, and am good 95% of the time. Have you seen the other thread(s) on this ?
Adware isn’t necessarily malware .

Do think it’s in the banner ads.

@calmom Sorin once advised to use the full site, not the mobile format.
My issue I slip back to mobile (? when I come back after a while.) That was this am’s problem.

I used to get pop-ups on CC on my phone pretty frequently. I downloaded the app Adblock Plus on my phone and haven’t had the issue since. I have an iPhone.

I use an adblocker on desktop, but not mobile. Supposed I could download an adblocker for my smartphone as well… but then that’s one one more complication – I generally will use mobile for browsing but if I want to post wait until I have my laptop & full keyboard. I’m not too keen on teens finger typing and the auto-correct on the smart phone only makes things worse.

Other sites manage to work with reputable advertiser for their banner ads without pushing adware to their users computers. In my mind there is a big difference between ads that are simply visually annoying or distracting… and ads that open unwanted popups on the users’ devices.

Yes, I get it too. Not everytime, but enough that it is a big nuisance

It’s constant for me since yesterday. Happens on my Android phone and only when using Chrome (okay so far in Firefox.) Cleared my browsing history and cache - neither helped.

It’s because whoever CC uses to serve mobile ads clearly has some quality control issues. The solution is them going to a different Address provider, but they seemingly don’t want to do that. Using the desktop site on mobile should never be the solution.

@CCadmin_Sorin

I’ve been using Firefox focus for Android for awhile without any issues. Its a privacy web browser. Only inconvenience, is that it doesn’t save passwords.

If you saw the prior threads, seems users had issues in all scenarios.

I only read CC on my Android, I don’t log in and I don’t post, but I was getting those “It’s Friday, you have won…” I quickly power the phone down and when I turn it back on again, it’s gone. I hadn’t associated it with CC. I will now but I am not sure what to do other than not read on my phone since I already don’t log in or post.

Constant now on my iPhone. The site doesn’t even let me open it without immediately redirecting to the spam ad.

Read the pop up spam thread in the community forum

I’m having the same problem. Android, Pixel2, only on CC.

If you can’t delete the offending link or two in history, via the CC page, do it on another tab. Then recheck history from there. Dont go back into CC til it’s gone. Sometimes, you need to shut down.
