so we just had our third midterm and got grades back. on the short answer, i epic failed...again. i dont understand at all..i wrote detailed answers and i thought i actually did good. and when we got the tests back, i checked some answeres with a friend who did great on it, and for some of them, we had similar answers, but she got more points and i got NONE

i believe the same gsi grades a certain question so it is not likely that you’ll get no credit whereas your friend will get points if you guys have really similar answers.
you should get help from slc or office hours before the 4th midterm and the final (which is LONG, and tiring).
utilize your resources.

Onething I remember from them saying in chem 1a is that they give very little work if you get the ring answer but don’t show work for it-maybe u skipped some steps ur friend didn’t? And yeah the same gsi grades a q so I don’t there should be any discrepancy anyhow

anyone know the chem 1a curve? I’ve heard soooo many differing opinions! Some past students say they got C or Ds on their midterms and still got a B, while others say they only lower their initial standards by a 2-3 percentage points. I’m so worried right now cause i’m at a C-/ D+ average and CANT get that as my final grade.

I have around an 85% exam average so far and I’m pretty certain I’m going to get above 80% on the non-exam material… As long as I do well on the remaining midterm, I should be pretty safe for an A-/A, right?

I’m also curious to know what the final curving will be like (how much they lower the grade ranges). And, don’t worry, I’ll study just as hard regardless of how much they tend to lower the grading standards; I’m not looking for an excuse not to work hard.

I don’t remember if Chem 1A has the regrade option, it probably doesn’t. Anywho, I think you should look into talking to the professor or the GSIs about how your short answers were graded. I don’t think it’s out-of-line to question the fact that you got no points if you sincerely believed that your answer was right.

use the SD to kinda figure out where you stand for each midterm. the curve in the end is generous enough that i think if you get around a B average for midterms, you MIGHT get an A- (depends on your labs and iclickers too).

when i took the class i used the standard deviation. if you get above average, close to/above 1SD, then i’d say, assuming your lab scores are good, you should be safe for A-. of course, you don’t want to screw up the final.
also, always look at the answers posted for the midterms, especially for short answers portion to know what the GSIs would be looking for when they grade.

When I took chem 1a, I got an 88% which turned out to be a solid A. I think usually 87% and up is an “A” and 82% and up is an A-. The way they curve it, it just be easy to get a B/B- unless you’re consistently doing below average on the exams.

cwk pretty much has it right. as long as ur >= 1 SD youre good for atleast an A-. i think i had something like an 83 or 84 and i wound up with an A-
